What's the deal with 'Military' Cobra NjXs?

I occasionally see 'military' Cobra NjXs. I assume that these guys are not GalCops. But I don't think that they're Galactic Navy.
What's their role? Do they respond to distress signals and take on fugitives?
..

No, they are just versions of Cobra ships, perhaps originally developed by the military.
They can appear as police, also other NPCs including pirates, and they can be bought by players, too.

Strictly speaking they are ex-military. The specification is slightly improved over the vanilla NjX and they are slightly more expensive to buy on the second-hand market.
They look cool though!
