I've finally got my act together and am releasing a (hopefully) proper version of an oxp that's been haunting these boards for quite a while now.

Griff_Krait.oxp
This oxp adds a variety of non player craft to Oolite, all of them pirates!
Image
The oxp won't work on v1.65 of oolite as it takes advantage of the increase in vertex and polygon count available from oolite v1.68 (?) onwards.

Download here: http://www.box.net/shared/ik9j0fi5co (2.5MB)

.obj format files for the models & the texture files seperated from their alpha channel textures are available here: http://www.box.net/shared/pl65qrrk84 (about 3MB)

Very Cool. I've added an entry to the Wiki OXP page and a template ship page with the download link. I've left the 'backstory' blank if you fancy adding one. 8)

http://wiki.alioth.net/index.php/Griff_Krait

EDIT : I don't mind submitting a backstory if you've nothing particular in mind. One minor thing, very much like the different versions giving variety to the types of Griff Krait encountered. The Equipment actually appearing on the model is really cool. Only thing is as each entry has the role pirate, each version 'goes into the hat' as a seperate 'card' when Oolite randomly picks a ship with the role pirate. The Griff Krait is therefore about 9 times more likely to be chosen as a pirate than (say) a Mamba. Maybe given them pirate(0.2) each so they have an equal chance of being chosen and which version has an equal chance of being chosen when a Griff Krait pirate is called?

As I'm testing a new version of Random Hits ATM i only have Griff Krait and my ship (Imperial Courier) installed. Got jumped by an I.C. leading a group of 5 Griff Kraits.

Cheers on the official release,

Now we need a background story for the WIKI 8)

Thanks guys!
i've changed the role to pirate(0.2) for all the ships, the download link is the same as before,

LB, wow, thanks for setting up the WIKI page! It's really kind of you to sort that out, I've no idea what to write for a back story for the oxp, and i'm pretty sure whatever i came up with would be a chore to read!
In reality the oxp came about as a fun project about the time the dreamteam project started, i wondered if i could come up with a fancy new version of the built in krait ship, then it became a test ship for all the shader effects that started appearing.. see very boring, so i'd be delighted if you wrote out a backstory that explains why it's called a krait yet hardly looks like one :D
it's size is W: 88 L: 105 H: 50

I posted it in the 'rough guide to the Ooniverse tread' So maybe one of the excellent story writers can make up a good background story for it. If no one does I will do it but first wait if someone comes up with some reading material 8)

Might have a go.

Although Griff Research Limited is today a reputable company, in his younger days the Company's founder learned his trade in the illegal 'chop shops' of Galaxy 7. One of his most infamous creations was the Krait modification. The ship was almost rebuilt from the ground up in order to house duel lasers under each wing. The krait's small frame was ill suited to mounting such heavy weaponry, the power drain only being solved by the instillation of a heavy quillium reactor and a substantial loss of both speed and agility. The Griff Krait is not however it be under estimated as a fighter. The Craft's ability to mount fuel injectors compensates for its week engines and whilst it may be slow to draw a bead on a target, once acquired the target can be easily swept with fire from its twin guns. Shielding is minimal, but its powerful reactor quickly restores depleted shields. Whilst a Griff Krait will melt under a few seconds of Military Laser, if not killed cleanly it will quickly recover and re-engage its attacker. Unfortunately, the ship's revolutionary reactor proved its commercial undoing. Tests by the Galactic Health and Safety Executive quickly established that the shielding was inadequate and prolonged exposure caused insanity in most species higher up the evolutionary ladder than a demented bee. Sale of the Craft was banned in 2998 and no reputable shipyard would service one. Manufactory of the Griff Krait continues however in illegal workshops and Renegade Stations.

Small DA reference.

This is sweet! Lets see what mr green has to say,.

They would be great escorts for an anaconda. They both are vary slow. We should add turbo jets to both.

Don't Panic: FSOneblin

Cheers. I've put a tidied up version on the Wiki Page. Could still do with a bit of puff for the Notable Features section.

RE: Background to Griff Krait.

My 2cr worth (add to the background info if you wish). Some continuity errors may have to be ironed out though. I think it makes sense...

Despite the banning of the Krait in 2998 GRL Further complications in the attempt to legitimise the Griff Krait as single pilot fighter came about in early 3027 when Faulcon deLacy Spaceworks tried to sue for damages. Faulcon deLacy spaceworks claimed that they owned the Krait name and that the schematics of the Griff Krait bore too much of a resemblence to their Krait. Despite GRL arguing that their ship was a modification of the original design Faulcon deLacy disagreed and began court proceedings against GRL. The ensuing court battle cost both companies heavily. GRL image was tarnished and Faulcon DeLacy had to temporarily halt the manufacture of the Krait and spare parts for the duration of the case. However, an undisclosed out of court settlement in Faulcon deLacy's favour ensured that spare parts and servicable mechanics for their version of the Krait would be available for sometime, despite the introduction of the sleeker, faster Mamba and the fears that this new ship would render the Krait undesirable. Although the banning of the Griff Krait was almost the undoing of the fledgling company, it did lead to the detailed examination (3031-3035) of the galactic laws regarding the copyright of ship names.

I think you mean dual… but if there’s a dual laser under each wing, there must be at least four lasers. :-)

Yes. This was the rough version. Put a tidy version on the Wiki.

YES!!!

Good background stories here. I like it when a ship comes with a tale to tell. Otherwise it's just a ship (albeit a very pretty one).

However Griff Research Limited still exists and does some work on the stations (see my background story on the stations) So I like to see this somehow connected to these stories.

Excellent work!

LB I couldn't find it on the WIKI though 8)

There is an entry for Griff Research Ltd on the Powers and Organisations Page. In later years, the company was responsible for the Malfunctioning Battlebots, Navy BattleBot MkI, Navy BattleBot MkII, Control Drone, Cluster Bomb, Splinter Missiles, Aeron Class Frigate, Plasma Sentry & Balrog Class Dreadnaught. Check out the Assassins Project I did with Griff and Ramon. Most of these ships are not Wikied as a Commander has to become a member of The Brotherhood to encounter them.

I'll Wikifi the entry though to point to other background information on "Griff Research Ltd."

Also added Gareth3377's entry to the page.
