Hello guys. :D

I recently downloaded Oolite 1.65 for Mac and quite frankly I love it already (nothing beats a space simulator)! However, after just signing up and browsing the forums, I've noticed the massive amounts of updates/addons etc. Could anyone guide me (and Oolite Newbie) to which steps I should be taking to maximize my Oolite experience? :oops:

Thanks!

Regards,
Westwood

Welcome to the boards. There are an enormous amount of OXPs to add (some are dependent on which galaxy you are in e.g. Assassins requires you to be in galaxy 7 - so don't add until you are in that galaxy). Also, OXPs do tend to eat memory, the more you add the more performance hit you'll take with your computer.

Do a quick search of the forum and you'll find many recommendations. Also search the Wiki. The mission oxps are a must, rustyships is good, bank of black monks, yourad here, hoopy casino etc. The list is long. Use the wiki, search the boards and then make your choice.

Happy hunting.

Oh, and BTW, if anyone offers you a trumble just say you're a bit short of credits and walk away...quickly.

Go to the OXP download section of the wiki and download some fun!

I recommend the galaxy one specific mission OXPs;
Black Baron, Longway Round, Asteroid Storm, Spy Hunter, Taranis Corp HQ.
Other worthwhile, galaxy independent, missions are;
Random Hits, Military Fiasco, Local Hero, Oo-Haul, UPS Courier

Grab lots of dockable objects, more opportunities to trade/fuel up has got to be a good thing! Best ones are;
Anarchies
Bank of the Black Monks
BuoyRepair
Deep Space Dredger
Free Trade Zone
HoOpy Casino
Military Station
Random Hits
Taranis Corporation HQ
and when you have an iron ass, Pirate Coves

As for eye candy, go for;
Your Ad Here!
Cargo & Wrecks
System Redux
Sung's Detailed Textures

Custom Sounds and Hal's Hot Sister are well worth having too

As for additional ships, well, that's personal taste. You could try Reasitic Shipyards, it adds ALL the new ships, but has some issues. I am nervous to criticise it because its creator is a bit sensitive about his baby... but you do have to realise that it is a very big OXP and will make your computer work hard. It adds ALL the ships, which may be undesirable... you can edit out the unwanted ones, but you might find it easier to just add individual ship OXP one at a time and suck it and see. And finally it messes with the roles assigned to ships, so that vessels do inappropriate things.

Personally I would add stuff slowly, and see if you like 'em. Depends on your style too. If you want to dogfight with interesting foes, add light fighters. If you wand to plunder fat trading vessels, add them.

Hi, Westwood, and first of all welcome to the boards and of course to this great game! :D

The other guys have given you some hints about OXPs, but there is also something more basic. Oolite 1.65 is the official release, and it works quite well. But Oolite is under constant development. Right now we have reached development version 1.71.2, which has a lot of improvements, compared to 1.65, the most obvious of them being better graphics.

I would recommend that you try it out. You can install it in a completely different folder from 1.65 and just move over your save-games and AddOns. And then you can fire up both games independently and compare yourself.

You find the download location here on the boards, in the forum of your computer system (Mac, Windows or Linux). Look for the thread that says "1.71.2 released" or something similar.

And for all your questions there is (apart from the boards, of course) the Elite Wiki. For a start I recommend the Instruction Manual and the FAQs. Both are linked to more information, if you like.

And if there is something you don't find an answer to, feel free to ask here on the boards. Usually there are a lot of very helpful people around here.

So, have fun with Oolite!

Right On, Commander! :D

I download the System Redux OXp in hopes to add a bit more eye candy to the scene.

However....I'm not exactly sure how to increase the star/nebula effects so the back drop will look something like Image but not Image.
Can anyone guide me through the exact steps to increasing the amount of stars/nebula if possible?

Thanks. :wink:

Sorry Westwood, for this one you will have to wait a bit. It is a feature that does not exist in the current version. The teaser screenshots posted elsewhere are actually from the bleeding edge development tree, not available to the public yet, unless you can build the source code from the repositories. Instructions on how to do that can be found on the Oolite wiki.

Be patient for 1.72 and you will be rewarded ;-)

I've noticed that the ships in the Ship Purchase screen have become exceptionally dark. Can anyone help me fix this?

its because of the new shaders that where implemented in 1.68 i beleive..
demoscreen ships and purchase ships are dark because of the lightsource...

you can set shaders to full, simple or off in game options...
that will help, but ofcourse with the off option, the nice new effects on ships with flickering windows, and various other effects will not be shown...
standard ships are still standard though...
