Pictures of the creatures living on a planet

It would be nice (eye candy only so it's an OXP) to see a picture/illustration of the race lving on the planet in the planet screen. If there are living yellow slimy frogs you should see a miniscule .png in the planet screen with a funny pic of a yellow slimy frog. I got this idea from seeing mister Gimlet. So it will be just Eye candy but you can make it as funny as you like.

There are 6913 possible species in Oolite – rather more than the number of systems (4096), but they can all occur in passenger missions. If you draw twenty of them per day, you’ll be finished in less than a year. Get cracking! ;-)

ahummmm.....................:?,
Yes...............
But don't they fall into main categories like humans, Frogs, Felines etc....?

True but Deadly Frogs are not to be confused with the friendly Edible Frogs!

Well Elite plus had a nice planet screen with race pictures.

I am sorry, but I have to disagree with putting images of inhabitants on the screen. I would hate to see Oolite turning into Muppet Show. One of the reasons I disliked the Atari / Amiga / PC versions of Elite was exactly those really silly icons of inhabitants. They were completely ruining the ambience for me.

Of course, this is only my very personal opinion, your mileage may vary.

I must say that like it without the images as well. If you ever saw First Encounter's attempts at videos of the locals when docked then you'll understand why!

Also the amount of work to get them up to the standard of the rest of the game would be enormous. But if you can get all 6913 of them done to a high quality so that they really add something to the game then that'd be great...

i´d say, since this would be for the planet screen only, and really not adding much to the game other than a image of some fibonacci random seeded species, The workload is simply to much..

If Oolite was so advanced that you could see inhabitants of station work/walk around, and for the blood thirsty, pick up Bodies that you could sell as food, or that repaired something while in space suits...

Then by all means...

But it would require lots of models, or some base models that where morphed randomly, but again, the sheer workload needed to do this would be overwhelming for a free time project like Oolite..

Not to mention the CPU/GPU time required to make all this...

Either way you attack this, + the risk of it getting rejected it wouldnt be worth the trouble...

I agree by now. I also get the point. It's indeed a daunting task. I better keep concentrating on the Station OXP. This week I'm gonna make some textures for the ICO-stations.

Will anyone ever try to add a FPS to the game?...

Since the stations don't belong to the systems but to GalCop, three or four body types, a dozen heads, and a few procedural ornaments and colours could make for plenty of visual variety... that shouldn't be sooo bad to the processor.

I think it would be a good thing to do, but I can't see it being part of Oolite any time soon.

Nothing stopping people writing a separate game though. Maybe a separate game could be integrated into the Oolite engine somehow (use the same save game format, some sort of data file that supplies location information and the like...)

You mean like, landing at station --> opening a Doom - RPG style walkaround in the dungeon interior of the station? Or getting closer than 50 metres to a planet very slowly --> opening an Oblivion - RPG style walkaround for "having landed on planet and walking around"?

With the graphics of your ship "standing there" included?

Let me dream :)

Cmdr. Maegil 8)

I think you know about my scripting capabilities ... and I fear for that kind of thing "hack & slay" just wouldn`t suffice ... :(

But, if ...

... someone would get the idea to do things like that ... I would be amongst them that cheered them all the way! :D
