And more for scientific purpose...

The equirectangular map from an earlier post converted to a cube map [option cube] via the powerfull planettool

Image

It shows a tinier seam than the povray cubemaps which make me think the povray cubemaps were converted a bit different

Next exercise converting a povay cubemap into a equirectangular map

Image

Shows no obvious seams
Povray cube maps were constructed from 6 rendered frames taken from inside the textured sphere. Frames are then assembled into the tall-strip format to use as a texture. There is no conversion from any other coordinate system.

It is likely that since the povray camera was a perspective camera rather than orthographic, there is some distortion at the seams.

Do you have a screenshot of a Povray planet cube map with seam irregularities - what should I be looking for?

Not sure if it's related. I'm seeing this small seam on Lave with Povray Planets 1.1.Image

What would you see if you tried landing there?

Couldn't find the first one as I returned to Lave with fuel injectors. It may have vanished into the night.
Here's another seam on Lave close-up:
