Since it has been so long since I played, what are 2 good, safe but profitable planets to trade between for a beginner?

I'm referring to galaxy 1.

Hi, bulrush, Welcome to The Friendliest Board This Side Of Riedquat!

Generally speaking, routes from poor agricultural to rich industrial worlds are the best-paying ones, but the government type is what says if the route is safe - anarchies are the most dangerous places, the least patrolled by the cops and with the most pirates; on the other end of the spectrum you'll find the secure corporate states where piracy can be hard to do unnoticed...

All this information can be seen by pressing "I" while on the short range map, you'll get ysed to the icons quickly enough.

I make my money running the Leesti to Diso trade route.

Leesti is less than 7ly from Lave so easy to get to.

I buy machinery at Leesti and sell it at Diso, then buy food and textiles and sell them back at Leesti.

Leesti and Diso are rather close together so you can make a jump to Diso then back to Leesti again on a full tank of fuel.

Also, I make my money by asteroid mining, and Leesti is very very rich in asteroids. Get yourself a mining laser and fuel scoops at Lessti then start collecting money. When you have enough go to Zaonce (2 jumps from Lessti) and buy yourself a ore processor. That will turn your mined material into things like precious metals, gem stones, alloys, ect.. thus making more money.

Leesti and Diso are also both safe planets to visit. Leesti is corporate state. Diso is democracy.

All the planets I mentioned are local to Lave: http://wiki.alioth.net/index.php/Short_Range_Chart

@elite:
Thanks for the tip on Leesti being the place to go for mining.
I've been thinking of donning my miner's cap for a while, and now I know where to start!
Assuming you've left a few asteroids for us newbies that is ;-)

If you search the BBS, you should find several threads on this subject. You could also check this site

I've been making a killing (hehe) trading between Onlema (Tech level 12 communists) and Maesin (Tech level 1 anarchists). I make 40c a tonne carrying computers to Maesin, and food the other way. Occasionally slaves can be bought for 2c a tonne, or narcotics for not much more, and sold for a HUGE profit on this route. I'm currently an offender but the GalCops don't seem bothered, and I can auto-dock whenever I stroll into town

Onlema (Tech level 12 communists) and Maesin (Tech level 1 anarchists) is hardly a "safe" trading route.
Just getting there from Lave is a bit of an adventure in and of itself.

I use Xexedi (TL14 Confederacy Rich Industrial) and Laenin (TL4 Communist Poor Agriculture), they're effectively less than half the distance from Lave that Onlema is. They're still not super-safe systems -- strangely I see far more pirates at Xexedi than I do at Laenin.

Zaonce (TL12 Corporate State Rich Ind.) or Tionisla (TL12 Democracy Rich Ind.) and Isinor (TL7 Confederacy Poor Agriculture) are very near Lave and relatively safe. If you follow an Anaconda (with its 6 Cobra 1's as escorts) from about 15-25 km behind it, the few pirates should attack it first and leave you alone.

Zaonce and Tionisla are both Average Industrials and, as such, not optimal. The safest and most profitable trade route, which is also reachable by a green Jameson easily, is Isinor - Ensoreus.

My bad, they appeared as Rich Industrials on the Galaxy01O1.png picture.

Sadly, Isinor - Ensoreus are far enough apart that you'll have to refuel after each jump.

Ensoreus to Ararus is my favorite. If you travel off the beacon you will encounter few hostiles, in either place. However, if you wish to practice your gunnery, you can travel down the main chute and pick off pirates along the way. I recommend the latter, only after you have hardened up your ship a bit. . . ;)

I always favored the Zaonce to Inisor route, myself. :P A LOT of easy money to be made for little distance covered, and relatively few pirates.
