Oolite Bulletins

I am currently running 1.68 and the stella background looks like this...


However with 1.70 it looks like this...


I would rather upgrade to 1.70 but I hate the backgrounds now. It is even worse with some other planetary systems that have more nebulae.

I do not have Sung's Textures installed (someone told me that could be a possible cause).

Has anyone got any idea as to why I am seeing these ugly lines in nebulas with 1.70 and how the hell to get rid of them?

Can you post your full system specs please? Especially graphics card and driver related ones. Also try the game without any OXPs and see if it makes any difference. The first 50 or so lines of a game log could also provide some useful information.

To be honest I am not too sure what graphics card I have.
Where would I be able to find out?

I have tried 1.70 without any OXP's installed and it is still the same.

Try removing galaxy256.png from Sungs texture pack.

Your graphics card is listed in the stderr.txt. You have a VIA/S3G UniChrome Pro IGP/MMX/SSE card, which is quite low-end and with doubtful OpenGL support. The fact that a) no one else has reported a similar problem and b) you get the same (bad) visuals without OXPs installed is quite a clear hint that this must be a drivers related problem. You can try to update your drivers to the latest version (download from the S3 Graphics site) or, alternatively, you can stand by for a little longer, until the next Oolite version goes public. Ahruman has rewritten the sky code completely, so there is a good chance that the issue won't be an issue anymore.

I'll update the drivers just in case and will also wait untill the next version comes out.

Although the graphics card is low end, is it strange that I an play other high end games.

While I’m pretty certain this is a problem with S3’s infamously lousy renderers as another_commander says, I do have a workaround. I’ll look into implementing it as a hidden option in 1.71, since there’s a reasonably high chance that the problem will occur with the new sky code too.

I have solved it... well kind of.

I edited the galaxy256.png image and just coloured it all in black (I have kept the original).

I no longer have any green nebulae but that is better than what I had.

I will still update my graphics card driver though.

That’s… immensely weird. Only the edge pixels should matter, and they’re mostly fully black, although some are not.

Can I trouble you to try it with this version and this version?

This is what I have now, with the galaxy256.png image coloured completly in black, no more green nebulae like I said but better than what I had...

It seems, with the textures you posted, that only the brightest parts of the nebulae show lines. The darker parts look normal.

Try setting the ambient_level to something like 0.5 within a planetinfo.plist.

I've noticed you have a line either side of the HUD, has it always been like this?

You might want to try Commander McLane's (it's what I use)
