Recommend me a graphics card

Hi.
Just got started with OOlite. Having not played Elite since college in 1988,
I found a pocket PC version for my phone and was hooked once more.

Very impressed by OOlite, but a little envious of the textures (shaders?)
that you guys have. My old ATI Radeon 7000 64mb isn't cutting much
mustard with the high detail stuff.

Was wondering if you fellows could recommend a cheap AGP graphics card
for my WinXP system, preferably from the ones here,

Hi Gadget and welcome.

I've just bought myself a nVidia GeForce 8600GT 512MB which has reasonable performance for the cost (especially with a bit of overclocking!).

that'll be far more than enough for oolite so you can save some omney if you're not going to play anything very grahpical.

I can second the above. My PCI Express 8400GS gives me 75 fps on an Athlon 2200+.

I reckon that's out of my range, I'm not planning on this being a proper gaming machine, I haven't upgraded it for about 2.5 years. It's an old 1.8ghz Athalon with 1gb RAM, so i don't reckon it's worth throwing more that 40 quid at it.

I was reckoning the Peak AGP 7300GT512 would be OK,

That would be fine for Oolite, it supports OpenGL 2.0 so you'll be able to benefit from the wonderful shader effects.

That's right... rub it in :?

All right for youse guys with shiny new PCI Express slots.... I'm stuck with an ol' AGP only motherboard, so 7600GT is the fastest GeForce chipset I can find.

Don't think I can sneak a mobo upgrade past the fun-sherriff ATM :(

An Nvidia FX-5200 on a Celeron 2.67 gave me 65fps. You might want to consider this.

It should cost you about £25 or less.

I'm looking forward to installing Oolite once I submit my doctorate in 8 weeks - it would be stupid to install it until then! But does anyone with more technical knowledge than I have know if my NVIDIA GeForce 6100 will be up to the job?
Hoping so, but do be honest!
cheers
Mark

On the basis that the 6100 should be a better card than the 5200 (higher model number) I'd say that it is more that adequate.

Good luck with the doctorate and make damn sure that somebody without knowledge in your field checks the spelling in the thesis.

Thanks for the advice. I'll do that.
