It's a sad day... *sniff*

Having been plagued by computer problems for the past few months I'm now finally back up and running on a shiny new Macbook. After installing Oolite, I copied my backed-up addons folder across and fired it up.
Only then did I realise that I hadn't backed up my saved games.
A quick spotlight search later revealed my beloved save file. However my smile soon faded when I loaded it up and found that instead of being Deadly with just shy of 4000 kills, an Imperial courier and 3.5m in the bank, I am now "competant" with just 268 kills and a measly 121k.
I dread to think how many hours of play it's gonna take to regain my former glory.

You are lucky because the Oolite saved game files are editable with any text editor. You can basically create a save file by writing it up, simply by keeping the format consistent to the .oolite-save format. You can look at any other saved game to see how the file is made up.
If you cannot get it to work for whatever reason, post the information of your last saved commander and, provided that I have the time, I could try to create your saved game from scratch. Information that will be needed is:
Commander name, present system and galaxy, amount of credits, weaponry available, amount of kills, ship type. That should be enough, I guess.
Don't lose hope, it only takes just about 20 minutes for your former glory to be regained

But, editing feels like cheating, even if you do it just to restore your deserved position...

See it as if someone had hacked, pwned or cloned your ID and whimsically messed up your life.
Now you have to spend some weeks between the police station, the Elite Federation office and the insurance company to restore your (good?) name...

I don't agree, it's not as if there was any cheating to get there in the first place, if you crashed your car, you'd get it repaired wouldn't you?
That aside though, it's still fun to start back at the beginning again, especially as now you are an "experienced" commander, you'll find that you can restore your position with gameplay at a faster rate than before, because of the learning curve.

And the 'insider knowledge' of any missions you've previously played:
"Now I have to make sure I have a Witchspace location programmed and ready to go when I kill that little weevil, otherwise I go splat!"

I decided last night not to "cheat".
It's gonna be fun doing it again, and I've learnt from previous mistakes about ship upgrades etc, so should make it there a lot faster this time.
Cheers for the advice guys.

My laptop was stolen, with my only copy of the savefile -- it just does not seem right to recreate it.
If I remembered everything, including exact kills, ship loadout etc. then I think I could do it, but it just feels wrong to have an approximation.
On top of that, I had accumulated some oddities that I dont think are meant to be. There were some odd bugs I think in a version I played that ended up with me having more than one laser in some directions (only one worked, but still), and some other odd duplicates . All in all I want to start again, the problem is it is too heart breaking to start at Lave with 100C

If you want a challenge, start off at Leesti with 1000Cr and an Adder!

Sorry to hear about the laptop

Nooo, use the trick of flying out of the space lanes, get a docking computer, and start to build up your cash, don't forget the flotsum and check for escape capsules returning to a station once you're in Coriolis range, it can be a lot quicker than you think.

Also is an excellent opportunity to start a game from scratch with 1.70 and help Ahruman by finding some bugs that can only be found this way.
Playing the game has no substitute for bug seeking.
OK, done

Well done guys, you convinced me, Cmdr Jameson rides again, starting tonight.
Itll probably be the end of my relationship, but Itll be worth it. First, to edit the src to remove the trumbles mission, then I am off
