Modding the ships??

Post by Pappy55 »

I would like a point in the right direction unless its already done in modding the ships to be more like the original.

Please somone correct me if I am wrong here but I believe in the original Elite you were stuck with the Cobra Mk III. I want to make the Cobra mk III the only ship you can fly and upgrade for the more nostalgic feel

Is this possible or am i wrong on the cobra being the only ship you could have in elite?

Have you tried to play on strict mode?
You know those who, having been mugged and stabbed, fired, dog run over, house burned down, wife eloped with best friend, daughters becoming prostitutes and their countries invaded - still say that "all is well"?
I'm obviously not one of them.

'Strict Mode' sets all the options to those that you would see in 'Elite', so (I haven't actually played so I'm not sure) items like Witchdrive Fuel Injectors, ECM-hardened missiles and the like are excuded from the F3 menu (and *should* be excluded from the options that NPC ships have available) for that Elite-retro feel. As I say, I've not played Strict, so I don't know if the option to trade ships is disabled, but give it a try and let us know....

The only other option would be to institute your own version of "strict play" and simply refuse to be tempted by all the glittery new ships out there! There's no obligation to buy a new ship... many pilots like to settle in to one type of craft or another, where they've worn out a comfortable dent in the command couch and where they can find their way to the head in the dark in zero-g without banging their toe or other appendage on some extra piece of kit. If the Cobra III makes you happy, stick with it! As you say, it was the only ship you could have in the original Elite.

Just to add: "Strict mode" is the mode in which the game "strictly" sticks to the old rules of Elite. So it seem to be exactly what you are desiring. One ship only, no fancy new equipment, and no modding via OXPs. Also these are disabled.

Do you want to go this far? Very few players do, according to a poll here on the board. Actually, nobody voted for strict mode only.

Another issue is that the strict mode is somehow broken, and was so for a long time. But as also myself have never tested it, I can't give you more informations. You would have to do a search on the board.
