Getting started but have a problem

Hello everyone.

Just want to say first how delighted I am to have discovered Oolite, played Elite on the BBC years ago and got to deadly. Hope to go all the way this time. Many thanks to everyone who has put the effort into porting this fantastic game.

I've installed V1.65, I've tried 1.69 but that just refuses to run at all, and have a problem with seeing the docking slot, the face of the station is in total darkness and I can't pick the slot out, if you get close enough you can make out the lights but not easily. Is this how it should be? graphics appear to be pretty much OK otherwise.

Thanks

Macleesh

Welcome to the boards!

Try Oolite 1.69.1. It runs pretty well on my PC - Windows XP (although due to some graphics card problem the nebulas are a bit messed up). 1.65 is the last 'offical' stable version (1.70 will be the offical next stable version), or you could stick with 1.65. Versions after 1.65 are betas, the problems worked out by playtesting for the next version. Try the textured planets build of 1.65 if you stick with 1.65 as thats stable and has some nice planets in it. You can play a game saved on 1.65 with any of the later versions, so you can start playing and upgrade later without losing your Commander's progress.

I had the same problem with 1.69.1. Not baing able to see anything shaded.
It's caused by low brightness.
I gathered it had to do with my hardware being reset to default, but your case may indicate it's more fundamental.

To fix:
Just increase the brightness of your display.

Unless you want to help look for bugs and earn brownie points. *wink, wink* it may be best to stick with versions 1.65 to 1.68, as 1.69 has several script-code bugs seriously compromising OXPs. (Many of which should be fixed in 1.69.2 YAY Ahruman *Gets suck-up prize* ;))

I've cranked the brightness right up and can now see the docking slot.
Windows desktop looks a bit washed out now but no matter, won't be looking at that much for a while.

Yeah lol,

the forums' dialog boxes are blinding now here too.
Just a question of determining how much is really needed, I kinda like the atmospheric darkness in most games. Still, I need to be able to spot those pirates approaching just so that the sun is behind them.... clever bastards.
