Getting and keeping Naval EU & Shields, and Cloaking Dev

Hi,

been lurking here for some time, and playing Oolite for slightly less.
Fantastic to have my old favourite Spectrum game back in a modern and customisable form.

I have a couple of questions....

I have completed the cloaking device mission, and now the Thargoid trouble that ended with a Naval energy unit. So far so good, but what happens to them if I trade my ship?

Do I loose them?
Can I buy them back for the new ship?
Do they transfer?

I would like to trade the Boa 2 down to something more handy, but don't want to loose the kit! :)

Also, I would really like to get my hands on the Naval Shields. I found one obscure reference on this forum that says you can't buy them, but you'll get them when the Navy think you are worthy (or similar words) but what does that mean?

Am I going to have to become a black monk?
Eat raw (and without BBQ sauce) Trumbles? :D
What?

Even a hint would help on this one please!

Welcome to the friendliest board this side of Galaxy 8 (at least it is now that I've retired from the Spam Assassins ), Commander Svenson! Don't mind the guys leering at you from the far corner of the bar, the Guild of Spam Assassins are still a little restless......

Good news! The Cloaking device is transferable between ships, although I'm not so sure with the NEU, although completion of the Thargoid Plans mission does 'unlock' their purchase from stations of the appropriate TL. Military Shields *should* be available for BCC's <checks the wiki entry>. Yes, Mili-shields can be fitted to Boa Class Cruisers at all TL 13 and above systems.

The Black Monks are simply (or not so for their 'clients') money lenders willing to cough up ready credits on the proviso that you pay up or face premature extinction.

And, personally, I don't know about Trumbles giving you Military Shields. You can always try. Like to buy one, just Cr30 for a cute and fluffy addition to you crew......

To add to the Cap's post:-

The Cloaking Device, Holy Homing Beacon and Mark Transponder Scanner will transfer with you when you change ships. (if you had them to start with).

You will lose your Military Shields and Naval Energy unit (but this is reflected in the trade in price you got). Military Shields can be bought at a high tech system, but cannot be fitted to every ship. The Cobra III and most fighter traders can mount them, but not all ships can. If your new ship cannot mount them, then they won't be offered for sale (even at a tech 15 system). You can buy a Naval Energy Unit at high tech worlds, but only if you won it in the first place by completing the mission.

thank you for that Cap'n H.... I'll decline the offer of a Trumble for now... I'll get some sauce first!

As to the Mil shields, I have never seen them on offer. I guess they occur at the highest tech level, but not a whisper of them!

Hi, Svenson, and welcome to the boards and of course to this great game! :D

Perhaps it's just a question of wording? It's called "Military Shield Enhancement" (as opposed to "Shield Boosters"). You can fit both of them at the same time, if your ship is capable of fitting them (which a Cobra3 Boa2 is).

The "Shield Boosters" are available in all worlds with a techlevel of 11 or more. For the "Military Shield Enhancement" you need to be in a station with techlevel 14 or more. The explanatory text for the "Military Shield Enhancement" reads: "Military technology, used in conjunction with ordinary shields and shield boosting technology, further increases the capability of standard defensive shields." There is nothing in equipment.plist to support this, but probably it is hard-coded that you have to install the boosters first before being offered the enhancement? Last thing: The Military Shield Enhancement is expensive, it will set you back 47550 credits! So you have to have that money first.

@Svenson:
Welcome to our cozy community, make yourself right at home!

@Ahruman:
Would you mind to take this bunch to the "Discussion" room? I was trying to sleep here!

No not at all, :) it's just more effective use of my time. When you are a millionaire, you don't need to go out of your way to earn more dosh, you just collect it as you go along!

I'd like to own a generation ship or space dredger, with my own scouts and bounty hunters, and send them out on foraging sprees.........

Oh yeah, the millionaires' dreams... One thing I love particularly about the games of the Escape Velocity series is that you in fact can have the biggest ship that is out there (e.g. the awesome Polaris Raven / or in the Star Wars total conversion of EVO I shipped SPICE like nothing good, until I could afford an Imperial Super Star Destroyer: wow! a ship that could fit all available equipment/escorts and still had lots and lots of space to fill!) and a couple of escorts with it that will do all (or some (not that I don't love to do most of it myself...)) of the dirty work for you.

But on the former question: Yes, I still do trade-runs. My ship (an Imperial Courier) has enough cargo capacity to allow me to trade, together with filling the rest of the cargo hold "along the way".

And besides: Perhaps one day an OXP will come and offer me the once-in-a-lifetime-opportunity top-expensive super-mega-über ship that's going to cost me some millions more. Who knows? So it never hurts to earn some more money. And as I'm travelling from system to system anyway...

Hmmmm.

Thanks for the advice! I got the Military shields (no credit worries - people seem to trust me now to carry large loads of precious metals for silly money!)

Not entirely sure I see the point of spending all those credits. My shields still dissapear too fast LOL :D and seem to take an age to recharge. I do have the Naval Energy unit and the normal extra at the same time, but the shield replenishment time is soooooo slow.

Are shields of different sizes for different ships? If I trade my Boa2 in for a Cobra III will the shields replenish more quickly because they are smaller?

Can you recommend a good ship to go to now. I've done enough pure trading, I have a good reputation in my current galaxy to carry the good loads. I'm looking for something that can carry some cargo/1 passenger and is small nimble and fast as I really want to go bounty hunting/scooping cargo. Like I said I have enough credits (Cr2M). I'm tempted by a Cobra Courier.

Now I've done the standard missions, what are the best OXP missions to play?

So many questions.... so little time!

Give a Dragon a look at next time you're at a ship dealer.

As a career bounty hunter, I subsist soley on laser baked pirate meat; the BBQ trumbleburgers are a light snack. The Dragon does the job efficiently for me. It's a little faster than a Cobra-3, a tad better turn rate while still having tame handling, about the same size, can mount all the important kit, can load up to 8 missiles (handy when the mil laser gets too hot), and with a faster recharge rate than a Cobra can take a beating. :)

It's limited to 15tc cargo, which is just fine for scooping high value salvage and not a problem if you don't milk-run anymore.

Yes, I have test-flown for the corporation that makes this craft, but they're not paying me to plug it. I'm simply at home in my Dragon's cockpit. :)
