Hitch-hiking galaxy jumps?

I've often noticed the wormholes left behind by other ships jumping around the place. As far as I can tell these are all normal jumps to planets within the same galaxy. Do ships ever leave behind intergalactic jump wormholes (and its just so rare I haven't come across it yet), or do NPCs not have this option?
