Finding a ship in deep space

I have been sent on a mission to destroy a stolen navy cruiser prototype. I have reached the system where the stolen ship was seen. But what now? I thought I would be contacted by a local spy telling me where to fly, but no such luck. How do I find a ship in deep space, short of picking a direction at random, flying as far as I can, then returning and picking a new direction? All that time hoping that the ship is actually still in this system.

Try checking the planet information screen (F7). You might need to dock first.

Usually a target ship is lurking near the wp or halfway towards the planet.

Try patrolling the lanes: fly from WP to Planet, planet to sun, sun to wp, and the reverse routes. If it is out there, you are bound to bump into it eventually.

I did. It told me to fly to a different planet, then to take a galactic jump and then no other information whatsoever.

Not this time.

How do I navigate to WP? I know how to find a planet or the sun, but not the witchpoint buoy.

F7 again

Keep looking at the F7 info at the planets near where you were sent in Galaxy 2. You'll soon hear the gossip on what this nasty fellow's been up to.

Remember, all ships in Oolite only have a 7 light year jump range.

The witchpoint marker will show up as W if you have an Advanced Space Compase installed.

I do, but it doesn't appear anyway. All I can navigate to are planets and starbases.

That's odd... did someone blow up the buoy? Either that or someone shot up your advanced compass and you have to repair it on a technologically suitable system.

Anyway, go to the station, see the direction from where the inbound traffic is coming and head that way until you start seeing hiperspace clouds.
Optionally, follow a patrolling cop and you'll get there eventually.

Did you remember to change the target by pressing the \ key?

Or the "#" key (depending on settings). You need to cycle though the markers. It goes in the order of:-

Planet, Sun, Nav Beacon (by the main station) shows as N, Witch Point Beacon shows as W, then any beacons added by OXP ships or stations (Black Monks Stations - B, HoOpys - C etc). Things with beacons are not necessarily indistructable however. If you (or some other vandal) has blown up the Witchpoint Beacon for example then no W will be displayed!

Here I've found the witchpoint beacon (Shows as an Add Board as I'm running the Doc's your Add Here). If I kept hitting # it would then take me to the beacons for the two stations orbiting the Gas Giants (H and L).[/img]

Nope. My compass is fine and I have never seen anything else than planets and stations on it, even just after I bought it. Of course, there are more weird stuff with my Oolite - I am using build 904 for Windows and everyone seems to be quite happy with it, only I have to restart the game every four or five planets because I run out of memory...

Yes, but no change for me :-(

Will try that one next time I start Oolite :-)

Are you hunting the constrictor or a ship from assasins or similar oxp?

In case of the constrictor, if you are lost after the galactic jump, you COULD install the constrictor_morehints.oxp which....adds more hints in gal2.
It shouldn't really be neccesary though.
You know the contrictor should be in the system, when the F7-hint states "There is a dangerous pirate out there!" or something of that nature.

Hmm. 904 sounds like one of the old versions. 1.65 is available here:

http://developer.berlios.de/project/sho ... up_id=2999

Or if you want the bleeding edge, Big A's test release of 1.68 is here:-

Found him already. It was one fast ship, one second I see it far away, the other it is behind me. But I destroyed it.

(It seems to me Miltary Shields are far too powerful, I have yet to meet a fleet which would actually attack my energy reserves)
