I want that ship!

Often, during a firefight, I see an escape pod eject with the ship still in one piece. If I have room I'll scoop the pod, if not...ZAP 'em.
That leaves a perfectly (if somewhat shot up) ship just floating there. It would be nice if the ship could be "salvaged" or even commandeered to "trade up."
Right now all I can do is blast the ship and scoop the wreckage and cargo.
Is this even possible given the current engine?

A very good idea, and perfectly in-line with the trumbles-story (what was it called?). For its codeability, I dunno, but I'm afraid, currently not possible.

I think I saw a thread about a salvage missile that you can shoot at a ship to carry it home. I also think that it was already functional as well...
Haven't played in a while, so I'm not sure... Might have been dreaming...

A quick search uncovered three threads:
A new one, started by dajt:
https://bb.oolite.space/viewtopic.php?t=2877, who seems to have made some progress in it.
An older one:
https://bb.oolite.space/viewtopic.php?t=2007, featuring our Master and Commander himself playing with the salvage missile idea.
And a yet older one with basically already the same ideas:
https://bb.oolite.space/viewtopic.php?t=1165.
So it seems, the idea has been around for quite a while.
Might be worth reading the threads.
