at the risk of sounding sarcastic....that's your icon to tell you you have fuel scoops

seriously though, the red bit shows that your cargo hold is full. If it's green you can scoop up cargo which other ships might have dropped after they were blown apart.....by some other rotten pirate.

Also, you can now fly to the sun and collect fuel...but don't fly too close, or better still buy the heat shield.

Hmmmm. This icon has caused a lot of confusion. I think I shall add a note in the Instruction Manual of the Wiki to clear this up.

It's the wasp indicator :-)

seriously tho, is that actually supposed to represent something visual? it's a cool little symbol and all, but for the life of me i don't see "fuel scoops" when i look at that. It's *definitely* some sort of wasp. or maybe a hornet.

Perhaps it could be replaced with some tiny text lighting up when appropriate: 'Scoops Active' instead of wasp blinking and 'Cargo Full' instead of wasp with a red behind.

I like it, I think it's a great little design.
I always thought it was a box.

Ideally it would be up to HUD designers :)

I want pink fur round the edges of the HUD and a pair of red furry dice and a cardboard air freshener shaped like a pine tree (but smells like damp cardboard, oddly enough)!!

"No, no, no, no! We've got enough crap in the cockpit without all that!"

In my college days (1980's) I had the world's only 1970 Dodge Dart with a digital dashboard (Computer Engineering degree). Yes, I was asked; "But what's the point?" I did it because I could.

I like it as is too. :p
There was some confusion at first (when PC version finally had a working HUD), but once you notice it blinking while scooping all becomes clear.

I rather imagined it as a symbolic representation of a scoop
(Imagine a piece of python hull on the belly hinging open)
The red part would be a piece of flotsam in front of it.

To make it really retro, why not change it to PacMan 'eating' a ghost!

Out of his clock-tower.
