The Thargoids are invading

I only started playing Oolite this week. Now I have two Thargoid Warships among my first thirty kills. No ambushes; both times were in-system, after responding to distress calls.

The second one went well. A full clip from my military laser into its exposed underside as it went for a Python Class Cruiser. It exploded, but not before launching lots of valuable Thargons for me to scoop up. Bless it.

Annoyingly, every viper in the station had been scrambled to intercept. My scanner was a mass of purple as I carried my five tonnes of alien artifacts back the the station. The place? Onrira. The safest system I know.

You're well on the way to Elite, but it's a long journey. If you have a military laser already, you should think about building your defences, and taking on some missions, you'll see some major action then and get in amongst the kills.

I have an energy unit and a shield booster. Can't afford the naval stuff yet; I'm actually saving for a Hamadryad, for which Im only 10,000 credits shy. Then I start again, with no stuff, but with 100 tonnes of space I should be able to iron it up in no time.

I *am* Elite on my Archimedes.

There are two ways of getting the naval energy unit, Thargoid plans mission (but you need 1281 kills, or buying a ship with one already fitted, availability of which is pretty rare, and very expensive.) It does make a big difference to your recharge rate and is well wort having.

IME there are usually one or two on the forecourt at Onrira. It sems to add about 250,000 to the asking price. Last time I saw some, they were a Cobra Mark III and a Hamadryad. Brought tears to my eyes.

I've had more fuel leaks than Thargoid run-ins... :P
Don't worry, they are out there.

As someone mentioned in antoehr thread, the Thargoid seem more confined to witchspace in oolite then they were in other versions of the game. i seem to recall comng across them very regular on the BBC/Amiga versions but i've only seen them once in oolite, outside of witchspace.

But why bother to scoop the Thargons? IMHO it is far better to shoot them, because each one gives you a bounty of 50 cr (you can't get that much more if you sell them) AND is counted as a kill. So for each Thargoid Warship, which releases five Thargons, you get a total of 350 cr bounty and 6 kills.

That's also the reason why forced misjumps can help you a lot in getting closer to ELITE Status, because each time you will meet at least 2 Thargoid Warships = 12 kills, more as your ELITE-status is advancing.

I say: Those damn Thargoids, kill'em all!

Your first encounter with a Thargorn is when you decide 'Okay, really need Military shields and Naval Energy Unit'.

And your first encounter with two Thargoid Carriers, surrounded by Thorgon Battleships etc really lets you appreciate the Q-bomb. I mean, it's also the only occasion where it is worthwile, financially speaking.

They count as alien items when scooped, and can be twice as valuable as the bounty. I guess it depends on whether you want kills or cash.

Military Shield Enhancements are available at good TL 13 and above stations. The NEU can only be got by buying a ship with it (and paying through the nose) or completing a mission.
