Hi everyone.I am another veteran of Elite from the beginning reaching a post of "deadly" on versions for -
Acorn Electron
BBC B
Spectrum
Atari ST
Amiga A1200

I guess I should have stuck to one format eh?

Right question.
I have it up and running on my WinXP pc but have always used a joystick on the other platforms but I have never played a game on the pc so my question is shall I get a game pad like a Sony PS2 or a Joystick like from the old days.
Either way will any make do or will only cirtain models do.I intend to buy a new one this week.
Finally I I found this site via a youtube video but that version had speach for the id computer and docking etc - how come ?

I look forward to many sleepless nights as this time I will reach the top rating.

Cheers
DH

Hi Devilhunter, welcome to the board.

I can't answer on the joystick/gamepad question as I use the keyboard but on the subject of speech, you would need to add an OXP in called custsounds but looking at the OXP sites Oosat One and Oosat Two it doesn't seem to be up there, not much help right at the moment but perhaps someone else can correct me... :)

Hi Devilhunter, the "Microsoft Sidewinder Precision 2" joystick works very well with Oolite (only problem is, you can't assign keys to the HAT).

So it is!
Mind you, in my defence, I searched on the word "speech" and when that came up with nothing, I looked in all the Expansions categories. Didn't think to look further to that. <shrug>

Hi, devilhunter, and welcome to the show :)

@Uncle Reno: yeah the searchfunction seems to be rather unuseable...

I'd like to control Oolite with my hat ;)

Do you use any additional software to map keys to the controller?

Thanks Dr. Nil, you reminded me that the joystick came with drivers that I didn't install, which will allow me to do just that!
Now I can look in each direction without touching the keyboard.

I use a Microsoft Force Feedback 2 as well (in Linux! how's that for a laugh?). It's been a good joystick (and still is).

I am extremely happy with my Saitek X-52. Just about every function profiled to some button on the joystick/throttle quadrant.

Same as me. It's nice how you can just set it in place, as long as you're not holding it.

My new Logitech Duel plays is a great gamepad. It worked right away but I dont like the anolog sticks so I programed the d pad instread.I now have perfect control. Now I have to improve my rating as i have only been playing for a day - 1 kill !!!!
There must be a better way to start as I sold traded my Cobra mk 3 for a mark 1 with a beam laser.Have I done wrong ?

No, you haven't. It's one of the choices available to you. The advantage is that you have some liquid assets to convert to weapons and protection. The disadvantage is that you have a smaller cargo hold, and will not be able to make money as quickly. Oh, and you're a tad slower in space.

I personally stuck with the mk 3 until I had cash to upgrade from that but as you've found out, downgrading does give you the chance of equiping your ship with extra goodies far sooner as well as giving you cash for trading.
