Mining.

Am I correct in assuming you can only get minerals (which are worth practically nothing) when mining?

Could you change it so you can also find radioactives, gemstones and precious metals as well. They should be rare - but enough to make mining profitable.

Yes you are correct, the ore would need to be processed to extract the precious materials and radioactives.
However you can buy these goods very cheaply in a rock hermit though and make good profits.

I agree that mining is an underdevoloped aspect of the game. There should be a greater variety of ways to make a living in the Ooniverse. The basic game really only rewards trading furs and computers. The Hoopy Casino oxp adds gold, platinum and gems to that list. Renegades oxp makes bounty hunting an option. Missions and mission packs can also give temporary sources of income. Hopefully future oxps will add even more variety in how to get a steady supply of credits. In many ways this game is still in it's infancy because of the many options in the oxp system.

I'd like to make a piece of equipment which processes scooped asteroid splinters to alloys and (courtesy of DaddyHoggy) at random intervals have the splinters yeild precious metals or gemstones.

I think this Ore Processor would have to take up at least 40t of cargo space and of course require fuel scoops. Unfortunately I have been unable to come up with a way to make this piece of equipment under the current exe. But perhaps somebody else would know how to do it.
