BBC- c64 Elite Boas launches Worms

Post by mocbo »

I observed several times , that a BOA freighter ( and only boas) or cruiser launches Worms for self defence when fired upon.
The Launch Frequency was 1 Worm all 10- 20 seconds. After a few time it is possible to have 20 or 25 Worms around in Space sourrounding the Boa and defending it.....

These events are relatively often in my c64 Elite.

In the first I think these was lifeboats... but lifeboats not opens fire with lasers.
Are these Boas a kind of Fighter carrier?

All is similar to the Thargoids with thier targlets

Has anyone encountered this ?

I remember this being the case in c64 elite, where boas and anacondas would launch worms and sidewinders as escort fighters. I believe this behavior was also present in Christian Pinder's "Elite: The New Kind"

I'm pretty sure in TNK it was just sidewinders that were launched from Boas and Anacondas occasionally, it also happened with rock hermits if you fired at them thinking they were asteroids.

Oolite Boas and Anacondas, generally have escorts, but it would be cool if some of these lone ships had the same ability. I guess this could be achieved by a OXP.

There were definitely no ships launching from Boass nor Anacondas in the BBC version. And we didn't have Rock Hermits either.

In my day, all this was Space....

I can't recall if the Amstrad version had rock hermits either, but they are in TNK and appear occasionally to launch a sidewinder if attacked, of course it may just have been that they were hiding out of view (sneaky blighters).

Sometimes on the Amstrad an asteroid would fire a laser at you, I guess they were the rock hermits. I'm not quite ready yet to rule out thet they even possibly launched a krait or a sidewinder once in a while...?

I do remember waiting for asteroids to be behind me before firing at them (to clear for in-system jumps) because if it turned out to be a hermit, you would have to take their fire all the way while passing it since it would affect you legal status to destroy it.

Pretty sure. I spent a lot of time playing BBC Elite - mostly at school in a darkened cellar. Don't ask. Got to ELITE twice.
I have got a copy of the BBC version running on a BBC emulator for the Mac, which I played a lot recently until I found Oolite.
I've never played the C64 version, so that might be where the mileage varies.

There were worms launched in the BBC M128 version of Elite, but I can't say I remember them from the BBC B version.
