Thanks for a brilliant version of Elite

I just discovered Oolite this week. I used to play Elite years ago on an old BBC B microcomputer and I have long thought it was the best game ever made for a computer. It's great to have a new improved version compatible with a modern PC.

I am going to enjoy playing this again. I have no equipment as yet...still making money for my first weapons upgrade. Got my tail feathers blown off by a trio of Fer-De-Lance pirate ships last night. My pulse laser and missiles didn't even scratch them so I had to run for it. Lost half my cargo but limped home in one piece...it was great!

Thanks to everyone who has worked on this, you have done a fantastic job!

Nick

 Don't worry you'll soon remember the moves from the 80's - luckily it's much easier than relearning breakdance. I started out installing most of the available expansions and was immediately attacked by Wolfs and Hydras  No way to limb home there. But I always go down laughing.

This is indeed a great game.

I haven't installed any of the expansions yet, I will look into that.

I made 'mostly harmless' today...I'm on my way!

Hi

You need to make a folder called Config within your addons folder if it's not already there. Inside that folder you put a copy of the file keyconfig.plist from ...\Oolite\oolite.app\Contents\Resources\Config

Open the copy you made with an editor like Vim

Use the decimal column from this table to find the values for the characters you want to use.

And consider borrowing a joypad to try how it feels. I'm using a dated wingman from logitech and it's great even if it doesn't have enough buttons on it (I still have to use the keyboard for eg ECM - it was that or the fuel injection).

Quite easy, right? The next step could be putting your mark on the Ooniverse by making and releasing OXPs. It doesn't have to be too hard really (depending on what it does of course - retexturing a ship=really easy, making something like Assassins.oxp= ask LittleBear about that one).

at first, I'm sorry for my English...

at secont, hello for all from russian fans of Oolite. It's realy great game. Now it's not only a clone of old legendary Elite. It's a new kind of game!

and now I want to ask you: why the bonuses for the pirates killing is so small? I think (it's only my pinion) that will be interesting to be a headhunter... Now I must trade for ensuring my ship. What do you think about it???

Hi.

You might be right about the bounty. I think the game makes it too hard to make a living if you have no or little cargo space. I'm a bounty hunter and trader in gems, gold etc. and often find it hard to earn a living. Actually my ship is often in such a state of disrepair that I have to spend my time trading out of the lanes (or fuel injecting) through systems and avoid every confrontation because I have to make money for repairs. It can be quite disappointing if I loaded the game for some action but get so smashed up by the first pirates I come across that I have to spend hours avoiding combat and trying scrape together enough credits for the repairs. The repairs could also be made cheaper or perhaps it should be possible to hire a mechanic like a piece of equipment.

And don't worry about your English. People don't seem to be mean about such things in here. They'll probably just ask you to say it in another way if they don't understand it. And writing and reading on English bulletin boards is a great way to get better at it :) I guess I write English ok, but actually my pronounciation stinks  Still it's much better than my Russian. I tried to learn that once, but man, what a tough grammar, and then there are the many 's'-like sounds to keep track of. I might pick up on it again at some later stage. It's a beautiful language.

Hi and welcome to the boards! Pirates have a variable bounty dependant on how long ago they were created by Oolite and how active they have been. To be an effective bounty hunter, you should go to an Anarchy and just make runs to the Witchpoint and back to the station. Oolite will create plenty of pirates to populate your Anarcy and, as long as you are careful and think tactically, you can make a profit from pirates!

And don't worry about language difficulties. We are a nice bunch and won't get irate if you write something we don't understand.

thanks for english... :)

about pirates: but I think that it's not correct... In legend (how it will be on english? in idea of game) pirate ship is not created right now and right here. So he must have any rating, any fighting history... and boutu more than minimal. As for me I like to traver between stars, I don't like to fall within only one system :) but, as I say, it's only my pinion...

well... I think we going offtop... sorry:)

Fitting fuel scoops will boost your profits, as you will usually make more money by picking up the pirates' cargo than on the bounty.

Thanks again for your help and support Dr space.yes i think i will try and make oxps in the future but will probs need some help as i have never done anything like that (programing) etc.i have looked at some of the oxps i have down loaded and they seem to be similar in content.i think the main problem might be the sizing of any craft/design,a rough drawing might be the main start for me then expand on that and also using the forum to gain some advice and help.but for now im goin to try the assassins guild :D .hopefully i will get some insperation whilst playing  .the version i have on my pc of oolite is the v1.65 exe (is this the best one for me?)runs on windows xp.my set up here is a del hp compaq, also i cannot find the speech oxp on oosat or anywhere else to dl any help there would be most helpfull.thanks again everyone...cheers 8)
