A mission inside Missionaries.OXP ?

Post by Old Murgh »

I'm thinking I'd like to make a mission element into the Missionaries.oxp version I have on my workbench, but I'm undecided about how I should go about doing it (out of fear from going on to do something that I later realise I should have started in a different direction and have to flush down all that I've done..)

So my dilemma is, do I attempt to make the mission work using my hardwired, outdated Oolite 1.65 methods until I stumble upon its/my limitations? (Could it even work? Are any of the current playable missions intact without later dedicated curating and .js improvements? My gut indicates no.)

Or, do I put my plans aside for now and leisurely study the most recent working missions to see what I can manage to borrow and twist to work the way I would like? (It's looking grim. Peeking under the hood of Assassin's guild or Coyote's Run makes my legs wobbly, leading my to my final option.)

Or do I surrender to my shortcomings in the modern-day scripting demands and put an ad in the paper seeking a javascriptL33t collaborator who has the time to join on my missionary crusade, and try to pitch my idea to this individual to inspire exuberance. And when one such never appears, or doesn't see cause for exuberance, turn to drink to forget my silly idea..?

Please advise.

There she stood in the doorway
I heard the mission bell
I was thinking to myself
"This could be heaven or this could be hell"
I would advise stilts for the quagmires, and camels for the snowy hills
And any survivors, their debts I will certainly pay. There's always a way!

Seems appropriate, although I wasn't looking end up someplace I can never leave.

Yeah! You just need someone to light-up a candle and show you the way!

Dumb pilot's advice: if you're going to do it, do it properly! Thing is, it might be hard to find mission testers these days. Back when Coyote's Run was being made, Okti had two dedicated testers on-call, ready to jump into their ships at a moment's notice, plus offer feedback and ideas.

Thanks, encouragement.
I'm certainly no Okti, but I'm not sure that my idea is so very technically ambitious, maybe only at an achievable Military.oxp level, so one one level I feel ok to go ahead with it. –But then as you say, "do it properly".. I could do like last time, put out a WIP, go underground for a few years, and maybe when I come back a brain will have been merciful.

Encouragement certainly, even ideas perhaps - but mission testing is beyond me now.

It's a young man's game. A lot of it is.

Does 52 count as young? Probably a line call.

Feel free to pitch something my way. If nothing else, I can help identify what bits will be hard.

Yep! I'd kill to be 52 again!

It is a matter of perspective. I'm 50 and the feeling is unpredictable.

Thank you, I will take you up on that. I'm just dreaming up ideas for what's ahead, I can't see myself going really deep into this until the weather gets cold again. Then again, around here thats not so far away.

Yeah, it's kind of chilly here at the moment. Looking at a very autumnal max of 19°C today, with rain.

Oh are you in the southern hemisphere? It's still sort of spring here up north but we are (I am) already beginning to dread the next winter.

Yep, spot on. Blue Mountains, west of Sydney. Here's what it looks like on a nice day last month not far from where I live:

Maybe not as pretty as Cholmondely's bluebell forest, but still nice, I think.

That’s majestic. Though your upcoming winter wouldn’t fill me with dread.
