How to get rid of trumbles

I made the (rookie) mistake of accepting a trumble .

Sunskimming only caused my my ship to explode due to very high temperature.

Removing all keys related to trumbles from the savegame resulted in this :

Code: Select all

23:20:46.515 [cheat.tentative]: POSSIBLE CHEAT DETECTED
23:20:46.515 [cheat.verified]: CHEAT DEFEATED - that's not the way to get rid of trumbles!
How to get rid of them without reverting to an earlier save and throwing away many hours of playing ?

sunskimmimg for fuel is easy but that doesn't get rid of the trumble.
I've stayed in the sun for 5 minutes and the trumble still didn't show any sign of dying.

Worked for me every time - you just need to hit the critical temperature and then they just shrivel - and I then leg it out of there...

Your hull temp increases in proportion to your distance from the sun. Even when you are a long way from the sun (way out of fuel scooping range), your temperature will be increasing (but very slowly). Stay a good way from the sun, at the point where your temp is gradually increasing and this will slowly kill the trumbles without killing you!

Still no success.

Flew to the sun using Torus until masslock, then reduced speed ino the green.
Once temp rose to yellow I stopped completely .

About 35 minutes later temp became red.
Waited 2 minutes, still no change.
Then quit the game.

I do have 12 TC food in as cargo, could that influence this ?

I'll probably look in the sourcecode to see if there's any possibility to force trumble death by script or revert to last save before I bought the trumble .

I guess untrumbled oxp will be first on my list of necessary oxps from now on.

Looking at the sourcecode I found no method to script trumbles to death and did find a very extensive set of checks to determine if someone is trying to get rid of trumbles.

Changing trumbles mission var to the value it has when you deny buying one was also detected and blocked.

As a last resort I edited the save for extra money to see if buying a new ship would get rid of trumbles .
I was surprised to see no trumble upon loading that save.

It seems that the detection of changing money happens before trumble checks and results in not checking/restting trumble stuff anymore.

Did I stumble on a method to get rid of trumbles by accident ?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't there a "purple" range, beyond red, right at the very top of the temperature scale as well? Could that possibly be where Trumbles are cooked?

Do you have EQ_HEAT_SHIELDS ? I thought the concept was something like you needed the heat shields to protect the delicate equipment, so the cabin temperature could rise into the deadly zone without triggering a game-ending quirium de-containment episode in the engine room?

yes, there is a purple range but that leads to exploding very fast. Even the 15 sec needed to hyper out is to long .

I've never been able to save a ship that went to purple.

Full iron ass, heat shielding is cheap and easily available .

Code: Select all

	<key>EQ_HEAT_SHIELD</key>
	<integer>1</integer>

I'm using oolite 1.91, perhaps someone is willing to test if killing trumbles works for them in 1.90 ?

I've barbecued trumbles thrice now (v.1.90 on AppleMac). No problems - and no awareness of your purple range either (but I wasn't looking for it)! But I used Fuel Injectors each time. Each also was played with the Stranger's World OXP suite - but that should have no effect with this sort of thing - my understanding is that SW affects fuel scooping rather than the cabin temperatures.

I'd presumed that the External Heat Shielding merely retarded the increase in cabin temperature - and thus leads to a lengthier wait before the trumbles commence barbecueing.

Your interpretation seems more interesting, though.

I may have found the answer.

Testing another ship with no cargo at all in hold I got the trumble prompt .
Accepted, noticed this trumble was much smaller then in the cobbie and created a new save.

The mini-trumble died approx 2 sec after cabin temp became flashing red.
Reloaded, bought 15 TC food (max for this ship/equipment) and tried again .
Upon launch the mini-trumble became about the same size as the one in the cobbie and didn't mind flashing red cabin temp for 3 minutes (at which point the ship blew up).

Cholmondely, please try to barbecue a trumble with lots of food in your cargo hull.

I use the Vimana-X HUD which gives a temperature read-out for the cabin temperature. To me, it has always seemed to depend on the temperature. Several of the other HUDs give a numeric temperature, too (CB-HUD Mark III, [EliteWiki] Numeric Style HUDs, [EliteWiki] Vimana HUD and possibly the [EliteWiki] HoloNum HUD?).

Next time I play I'll give your food option a try-out... does one need [EliteWiki] food which complements the taste of Trumble?

https://wiki.alioth.net/index.php/Fully ... list)_File

Code: Select all

       // =============================================================================
       // CABIN TEMPERATURE BAR
       // =============================================================================
       // Shows internal cabin temperature
       {   // cabin temperature bar
           height          = 8;         // Bar height
           selector = "drawCabinTempBar:"; // Drawing method
           width           = 80;        // Bar width
           // POSITION PARAMETERS:
           x               = -200;      // 200 pixels left of center
           y               = 51;        // 51 pixels up from bottom
           x_origin        = 0;         // Horizontal origin: 0 = center of screen
           y_origin        = -1;        // Vertical origin: -1 = bottom of screen
           // COLOR PARAMETERS:
           color_low = "greenColor"; // Color for normal temperature range
           color_medium = "yellowColor"; // Color for elevated temperature range
           color_high = "orangeColor"; // Color for high temperature range
           color_critical = "redColor"; // Color for dangerous critical temperature
           color_surround = "whiteColor"; // Color for the border around the bar
       },
The default hud dial for cabin temperature (CabinTempBar) uses 4 colors .

Apparently vimana-x hud uses a different system.

VimanaX_HUD.js has

Code: Select all

    var ctmp = Math.round(100 * p.temperature);
    if (ctmp > 70) this.$blinkingIcons("VimanaX_CTempAlert", "vx_alert_red.png");
    else if (ctmp > 50) this.$blinkingIcons("VimanaX_CTempAlert", "vx_alert_orange.png");
    else p.setCustomHUDDial("VimanaX_CTempAlert", "vx_blank.png");
That code snippet suggests vimana-x max temp is 100.
just note at what temp trumbles die with and without lots of food in the hull.

The food inquestion is standard oolite food cargo, which according to cim means "luxury food, interstellar delicacies, and the like"
. It seems trumbles are gourmets.
