(WIP) Some Thargoid Concepts

Post by phkb »

I've been playing around with re-mixing some Thargoid models, and I think they're looking OK. Here's what I have so far:

Thargoid Gunboat

Thargoid Frigate

Not sure what to do with these yet, whether to package them up as a new Thargoid additions pack, or keep them in reserve and use them to update the Thargoids in some other mission pack or such.

Anyway, thoughts and comments welcome. Including things like 'please stop, my eyes are bleeding". That's ok too.

Oh, and I have no finalised specs for these monsters. I just did a play test with the Gunboat and got summarily wiped. Might be a bit overtuned at the moment. I'd you'd like to suggest some specs, be my guest.

And yes, the both have four laser mounts (rather than the traditional Thargoid laser).

Personally, I think the gunboat might make an interesting drone/thargon design.

The frigate, whilst seemingly more traditional, is too reminiscent of a sandwich to me. Is it a space station or is it a custard creme? So respectful of the original that it has gone wrong, IMHO of course.

IIRC, the elite manual made reference of 'the smaller battleships' being the ones to make it into regular space. Others have made larger Thargoids but often massively and/or very much more powerfully so. How about a slightly bigger, slightly tougher model. Rather than giving it more laser power (or doing away with the distinctive Thargoid laser) you could instead give it the new drones and have them be more capable.

Just ideas, what do I know etc. etc.

OK, here's one that's less sandwich, and more slamwich! Yeah!

Combine a flotilla of these with

(1) something "humoungous and weapon-like"
(2) WB's Worldbuilder set to "Planetary Zap" mode (wreck economy, decimate population, downgrade govt, describe utter chaos on the F7 description)
(3) Your fledgling lightning OXP
(4) Turning the atmosphere orange
(5) PF2 with a mission to rescue the planetary governors or some such

And you will have a new OXP to give Arqubus and CPauloF something to show their viewers!

They are not supposed to "work" for us. They are supposed to exterminate us!

A well intentioned reminder that we have three versions of the Griff Thargoid already, one of which looks significantly different (even if, post Geiger, the whole biomechanoid thing has been done to death. Hello Elite Dangerous... )

For more variety, the Thargon drones made by other authors are a pretty varied bunch too. Check out the neolite one with its split down the centre or the texture on Sung's.

New additions would be welcome I think but I had somehow missed that there was a 'silver back' varient that had been around for years.

I liked that (green) as its a simple but well established alien colour all the way back to to early sci-fi film/TV (that medium being first sci-fi contact for many of us). Besides keeping the laser colour however, there's also a bit more room for manoeuvre with the Thargons I'd have thought.

I definitely prefer Salad. The other might get confusing with all the other different colour schemes out there.
