CPauloF Joga has published 4/5 films of his adventures in Oolite on YouTube: Um Matemaniaco no Oolite

See here: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=P ... SjhLn5ruEy

I am not, and have never been, a great game player.
On this channel I upload recordings I made while playing.
Here, you will not watch perfection. You'll even watch some pretty bad nonsense...
This is a channel with no other intention other than memories and entertainment.

Looking at his films, I wonder if he has been frustrated and has given up?

He seems to have issues with trading: he never checks the F7 screen and just jumps to wherever takes his fancy with what is cheap locally - and he seems to evince a prediliction for buying gold/platinum/gems at station prices presumably hoping to sell them at a good profit (and never does).

Can some kind soul with a YouTube account possibly explain the facts of oolite trading to him on his YouTube channel?

Looking at the age of the videos, it looks like a posting evey week with one due tomorrow.

You could be right of course (and I haven't watched the videos) but a bit early to worry on that score I think.

Maybe there will be an increase in views after your discovery, perhaps even increasing motivation to make more?

Well, I watched three of them. It's always interesting to see something Oolite-related on youtube.

Speaking of Oolite on YT, a few days ago I got this in my feed: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j3-gkusdUG0

I enjoyed the action parts quite a bit.

Did you see his linked lengthy Essay on Oolite? He is very complimentary.

I have about 500 hours in Oolite so I thought I should show a little bit of it off, since I recently upgraded to the latest v1.91 build. So here is Commander DarkenedRoom in his Wolf Mk II the 'Elegant Reprisal'.

This is a courier run delivering coded documents across 8 or so star systems. There's a bit of combat, including a Griff Boa Prototype, a little trading, a little rescuing, a little fuel scooping from a star, a little bit of automated and manual docking and finally we make our delivery.

Despite having 500 hours, I am a bit rusty and had to remap all the joystick controls and also had to try and remember how the primable equipment and military grade targeting works.

Written a quick primer as to why I think this is a bit of a revolutionary space sim, even today!

Still nothing - 3 weeks later.

I really do think that he needs some help.

Well, I've played Oolite many years before.
A few things changed in Oolite since then (ex: the oxp management...)
Last time was around 2016.
[I believe I have some saves from that time... I have to search ]
Last September (2024) I had seisures, and broke a vertebra. I had surgery, I have medicine, but, we 're in April and the pain does not leave me.
So I tried a few things to get distracted.
[One of my ships in Elite Dangerous is called "Broken Vertebra" :D ]

I tried, unsucessfully, to compile Oolite under a Raspberry Pi 4B.

But recently I managed to run it in Linux Debian 12 in my 2018 Laptop.
That is where the videos were recorded.
The videos are edited, so I never share everything.
I have Andromedas and Enterprise clones in the game...

I will upload new and better Oolite videos in the future. Don't worry.
And I promise I wont hack the savegame files...

I'll be back.

Sorry to hear that. It's still less than a year however so I hope it does begin to ease.

Very sorry to hear of your experience. I, too, use Oolite for distraction therapy, so completely understand where you're coming from. Hopefully Oolite can continue to provide some joy for you in a painful world.

Welcome! Nice to have a Portuguese-speaking player join us!

Gazing goggle-eyed at your You-Tube adventures, I wonder if you are finding the trading unrewarding - and frustrating.

If so, you might wish to consider the following:

1) Buy cheap goods that you know will fetch a good price in the next system (you need to know which the next system will be).

To do this, you need to know something about the economy of the next system. There are 8 economies in Oolite, and these are displayed for the systems on the F6 screen when you press "i" ... and the economy of the selected system for your next jump will be spelled out on the F7 screen.

Basically, Food, Textiles, Wines and Furs are cheap in agricultural systems (especially the poorer ones), and expensive in industrial systems (especially the richer ones).

Conversely, Machinery, Computers and Luxuries are cheap in industrials (especially richer ones) and expensive in agricultural systems (especially poorer ones).

Other commodities can be more complex, especially gold, platinum & gems. These are really cheap if you can find a Rock Hermit to buy them from - then you will make a good profit no matter where you sell them.

2) For more detail, consult the Oolite wiki's Oolite Trading page. And, there were two .pdf's hidden away inside your original game download which are also worth a peek: "OoliteRS.pdf" & "AdviceForNewCommanders.pdf"

Enjoy!

Not exactly. I'm a mathematician... I try not do/show maths in my game videos.
I have 10 ships in my Elite dangerous. Not bought with money from on foot missions (7/8 were bough playing Horizons).
All from tradding, not missions.
I haven't done a single combat mission outside the tutorials in Elite Dangerous, but I used to do it in the nineties playing Frontier.
When I restarted Oolite after many years, I decided not to take it too seriously. In those first videos I just tried to re-learn the basics.
It can be interesting for the player, but really boring for people watching (I learned that the hard way: looking to youtube analitics  ).
I crashed my ship a few times without autopilot, trying to dock in stations.
(I could make a video called "a thousand ways to crash a ship" but I know better...)

So I've been playing, just not recording, for now.

That's life... When we start or restart something, we make mistakes, I just don't want to show them all.

(I have one single Frontier - Elite 2 video there... It ends with me crashing the ship in Ross 128  )

So! Are numbers real? Are you a Platonist?

And can you suggest any additions to the lore for these?

I tried, unsucessfully, to compile Oolite under a Raspberry Pi 4B.
This will have to fail for a simple reason:
The Rasperry is based on an ARM architecture. Oolite comes bundled with some precompiled libraries. That is not bad per se.
But for one they are x86 or x86_64 based, and they are outdated for today's operating systems.
Unless you manage to upgrade/replace these libraries building, or latest running Oolite is bound to fail.

Otherwise if you manage to replace the libraries there is a chance of bringing back the current Apple platform and your name would be mentioned in the same range as the witchspace lobster and minions.

I see...
Your answer was better than most of the support I got. Thank you!
I have an idea where to start looking, I am not the best man to do it, but today I have chatGPT, and it may help in the brainstorm.
