using asteroids for cover?

Would it be difficult to make the AI ships unable to shoot through asteroids?

I was approaching a Rock Hermit (with the Pirate Coves oxp installed), when the pirates started filing out of the rock. After doing some firing, I figured I could take cover behind the rock while I cooled my lasers. I am pretty darn sure that the pirates were still all completely behind the rock from my position, but they kept hitting me, with their lasers apparently passing right through the rock.

I think it would be cool if it was possible to take cover behind asteroids.

This should work. Oolite’s non-player-centric architecture means the game doesn’t distinguish between an AI shooting at a rock and a player shooting at a rock. It’s possible the AIs got lucky with the ghost-objects bug, but most likely you just weren’t as hidden as you thought. ;-)

Hmm. OK. You may be right. I'll see if this ever happens again.

Had the same thing happen to me.

approached a hermit from behind, turned out to be a pirate-cove.
Pirates come queing out and start shooting at me from behind the cove.

Strange bug. I didn't make much of it at the time, as games tend to be full of this kind of unfair bugs.
Some in favour of the player, some of the computer.
