If/when prices fall, I'll be looking to go 4K (but I want faster than 60Hz).
4K (3840x2160), 144Hz, IPS, quantum-dot, 4ms(GTG), 16:9, 27" = £2,049.99 <gulps>
Improbability Factor falling - now looking at £749 for very similar spec.
That must be increasingly tempting.

I am curious. How common is it among the above-average PC dedicated to use a second side-monitor?

Yes, increasingly tempting!
I would advise stilts for the quagmires, and camels for the snowy hills
And any survivors, their debts I will certainly pay. There's always a way!

£2k for a monitor! that was more than my PC build!
i've a 28" Iiyama, 1980x1020, not sure what legit benefit i'd get paying about 14x what it cos just to go 4k resolution. worth the res on my 55" TVs but not sure for a PC monitor - personally speaking of course.

I like iiyama, very good value. I have an old 19" iiyama in the spares cupboard - if I had the desk space, I'd probably set it up as a side monitor.
Currently using a 24" Asus (1920x1080), which can be rotated to portrait mode. Very handy for long documents (or for 3 monitors side-by-side).

You're right of course, £2K for a monitor is insane - but £749 is getting there.

I have a long way to reach total geekdom.
So, O Mighty and Munificent One?

How's the new toy?

Has it arrived yet? Is it plugged in yet? Have you managed to turn it on yet?

We can send Sir Cody of El Viejo over to give you a hand with the crank, if needed...

Hah, planning to "defect", too, eh?
It seems that the higher the wall to their garden, the more migration (i.e. PC-only) or "bi"-approach (i.e. Apple/PC) for Apple's customers will occur. And the more loss of expertise for MacOS developers of open source software (where Oolite is at, already, sadly).

They're testing me. All parts have arrived, except for the chassis which is delayed another two weeks (and not the promoted 3-4 days).
Spare time has been very scarce recently (after work, clearing out a 4-generation house), so it would have gone slowly anyway, but frustrating not to have gotten started.

But come mid-november, if the show isn't on the road, I shall be calling for services of El Viejo con la herramienta espantosa.

I guess, just partially. I am too old and indoctrinated to ever develop the intuitive relationship I have with Macs onto Windows, but I am looking forward to experience what otherworldly pleasures PCs can offer. Rather than defecting, repositioning myself to a more neutral place..

Not sure if there's going to be any significant difference using Photoshop or Wings3D on the PC so I'll go with what is less hassle. But I imagine the games-aspect will be very different with curvy widescreen and full HOTAS fingertip power, so I am childishly looking forward to that. At the least I will be growing a more informed opinion of which to whatever task is the superior system.

And there was me thinking it'd be the graphics card which would be delayed.

No, just expensive but instantly available. Is it a wide problem, hasn't the craze abated a bit?

So it would seem. High-end GPUs had been in short supply for a couple of years.
At one time, my GTX 1070Ti was worth considerably more than I paid for it.

think there was a bit of a GPU famine and it got blown way out of proportion, from what i know of it. bit like anything, look at the toilet paper debacle at the start of COVID, people panic w/ no thought to logic.

I thought it was the booming cryptomining fad –farms of increasing megaproportions- that drove the scarcity and pricing to extremes. Mining is still a thing, isn't it?

And crypto prices crashed so hard that it quit being profitable to continue mining it unless you had nearly-free electricity and already had a lot of hardware to do it.
But you were probably still better off selling the hardware while the prices are high...
