regarding PSUs, if your budget allows i'd recommend erring on the side of caution and getting as powerful as you can to future-proof your set-up. as mentioned they will all be very efficient, especially the gold and platinum rated ones, so they won't cost any more to run, but you'll have extra power on hand if you ever decide to go multi-GPU or whatever. can never have too much memory or power :-)

If this build is for your gaming enterprises then the Ryzen 5 is good value.
( if this was my main machine for linux, I would look for more cores )
I am pessimistic about my chances to succeed in the Linux world, so this seems about right.

... against my inherent frugal nature...
Excluding the monitor, about £1400 - get that up to £1600 and you're laughing!
Steady there. I'm spending £425 on the monitor. I have some restraint. I went to a megastore and looked around at a broad spread of possibilities. 34" curved was definitely to my liking. Not so much when they got bigger, and not much point to it when they're smaller.

Compatibility: Warning! These parts have potential issues or incompatibilities.
Yes, my buddy assures me this is a routine generations shift message that isn't really in effect yet, or something. He wasn't worried anyway.

I hear you guys on this and it seems wise. RM850 it is.

Is this a final shopping list?

Restraint is good - it's only that, and a waiting list, which is stopping me splurging two grand on a 4K monitor!

This part list is private.

For comparison:

Fractal Design Arc Midi R2 (Fans: 2@front in, 1@rear out, all 140mm)
Asus Sabertooth Mk1 Z97 mobo
intel i5-4690K 4x3.5 LGA 1150 (Devil's Canyon)
32GB (4x8) Corsair Vengeance DDR3 1600 LPX RAM
Coolermaster Hyper 212 EVO CPU cooler
EVGA Supernova P2 850W Modular PSU
EVGA GTX 1070Ti SC 8GB GPU
WD Blue 500GB SSD
Creative Soundblaster ZxR soundcard
Asus DRW-24D5MT optical drive

Components bought one-by-one over several years. Some are old spec, but bought new. Total price: similar.

<chortles> Evenly matched, kinda... aside from that RTX 3060. Be sure to get the latest drivers for it.

Thx, bookmarked.
"Drivers" is another of those enigmas I only know from brief mandatory update encounters with office PCs. Not a term the Mac OS likes to bother its master with.

Beware of Windows "finding" graphics drivers for you. I don't know about WX, but I've known Win7 to try that.

OK, I shall remember to stay alert about this. You mean it could conceivably recommend I download a downgrade if I already had the optimal setup?

What I've seen W7 do, is detect no graphics drivers (say before you install the latest drivers), and try to download and install M$ "approved" drivers.

Which reminds me... it's time I updated mine. That latest nVidia driver is huge.

Question: do mobos still come with discs packed with the necessary drivers and utilities? Or are optical drives no longer needed?

my mobo had a driver disc, but Win 10, and sometimes the mobo, will just off and look on the net for updates. i had to get a new BIOs for my mobo but they're all now UEFI thingies and far more userfriendly and safe than flashing used to be.
win10 drove me effing insane cos it downloaded a new nVid driver that wouldn't save my custom settings, and there was no way to override it. has since been corrected by a new driver fortunately.
i think optical media is going the way of the flpppy.

So my next dilemma while waiting for my expensive Lego in the mail, win 10 or 11?

I'd go for 11 for the following reasons:
1. Windows 10 reaches end of life on October 10, 2025. Which means that you will probably want an OS that will not remain unsupported in 3 years.
2. Windows 11 is at its core just a glorified re-skin of Windows 10. Even its reported build version number is 10.0.22000.xxx, which indicates that it is not that far off from Windows 10, really.
3. It runs Oolite just fine.
