So do I understand that your auspicious Apple download works with palpitating perfection? That this is just a problem just for those poor benighted souls stuck with windows/linux?

I tried downloading by Expansion Manager (worked) and by clicking on the icon on the OXZ list page on oolite.org (worked).

I did that. Then, when going back to the game I got an alert that Hints didn't load because it was identical to the previous or something. I quit, threw out the old one, and then all was fine.

It might be that I downloaded the previous one manually from the wiki, so that an update function had a hard time doing its job, difficult to say.

No, since it was oxz I put it in the Managed AddOns. But even if I placed it manually, the file name should be identical, so I wouldn't have thought it made any difference.

i think the idea is to put the addons, that are managed by the addon manager,
into "managed addons" ( which are [afaik] only oxz )

and addons, that are not managed, into the "addon" folder ( which could be oxp or oxz )

and get all the informations he needs by entering the bar again and again

possible solution: ( example)
docking at space station
- entering the bar first time
- > get one hint
- entering the same bar a 2nd time
-> barkeeper comes and whispers "some of my guests don´t like people, which are too curious"
- entering the 3rd time
-> barkeeper - "i have warned you!"
-> strange things happens to your ship

Very nice! I like it. But I don't (yet) have the skills to do any of it...

But, Matthias, have you tried Life in the Frontier? If you use it enough (I saw it at Lave - some of the events are system dependent), there is a scene where you see some Vakume Danserz hoodlums defacing a corridor - are presented with a choice - and might then see some nasty things happening to your ship...

I was hoping to introduce something much more prosaic - a bill for the drinks! But the programming is currently beyond my abilities (although LittleBear provided some code on the first page of the related Education thread). Your idea is nicely immersive, though.

I don’t think you need to have the barman whisper a warning at you. Simply have it so that subsequent visits to the bar give you a response like, “You don’t overhear anything of value”, or even just go for a random ambience thing, like “The bar area is quiet at the moment, with only a couple of patrons lingering over their drinks.” A timer could be set, so that if you return in an hour (for example) you can get a new hint, but until that time expires you just get the ambience message.

I have an aversion to game logic that punishes the player when they’re doing something normal. Visiting a bar multiple times sounds normal to me!

So I was thinking about this, and originally decided that the hassle of navigating several screens (which I didn't know then how to fix) was a sufficient deterrant, and would last until I worked out how to charge for the drinks.

But since several people preferred otherwise - and more crucially because this oxp is designed to help new players - I decided to follow the expressed preferences for change. It's up to the player how many hints can be coped with at one sitting, so to speak!

I do want to add in a charge for the drinks, and would also like to add in Matthias' suggestion (as a random possibility) at some stage in the future, but am happy with it as it stands (presuming that cbr can download it without needing to invoke the Witchspace Lobster). Ditto with “You don’t overhear anything of value” & “The bar area is quiet at the moment, with only a couple of patrons lingering over their drinks". Ideally (if I had the skills) I'd like to work these into a choice of bars and have different things going on in each (for better immersion... and also, as mentioned previously, work it all into Life in the Frontier). I don't have too much experience of bars/pubs so am reliant on tips such as those above.

Random Hits grabs a little of the player's credits for a drink after docking (so it's not a cleverly-disguised automatic docking fee as far as I know).
Even gives you something for 'free' if you're really broke.
