I'm tending towards calling this one "Hints". I prefer "Bar Talk" as a name, but can see two arguments against.
(i) "Bar Talk" is too ambiguous. It could be anything, and one needs to bother to select it to get more information. "Hints" is what it says on the tin, no more, no less.
(ii) If I live long enough to work out how to include some useful GNN news flashes, Bar Talk will end up being misleading, while Hints will still be accurate.

Thought it had a Star Citizen look about it. Never got taken by SC - has it actually been released yet?
I would advise stilts for the quagmires, and camels for the snowy hills
And any survivors, their debts I will certainly pay. There's always a way!

Anyway - more rock hermit tips for Cholly, though I ain't sure how you'd fit them into bar talk.
  • There is always at least one rock hermit in every system.
    Some systems may have three or more.
    Some will be close to the spacelane, others distant.
    Some may be dangerous to approach.
    If you see a ship heading away from the spacelane, it's probably en route to a rock hermit.
    Some folk say they have a secret network, and control the black markets.
    If eye-candy OXPs are installed, Glowroids are easily spotted a long way off.
    Some used to pay good prices for furs and narcotics - perhaps they still do.

Rock Hermits may be off the beaten path...but they're bigger than most asteroids and can be seen from pretty far out.

Look for movement of a distant point-of-light while on torus to initially spot them and other large stations.

Two things to mention.

There is ROCK HERMIT BEACONS which makes them a bit easier to find. They still only appear off the main space lanes but that is a function of not everyone having some form of additional planets in use.

As for dialog options you could use the tried and true method of an Actor's Script, as in what the actor uses to memorize their lines prior to a performance.

Character 01: Dialog. More dialog. Still more dialog. Even more dialog.
Character 02: Response. More detailed response. Still more response. Even more response.
Basically what you would be adding is the Character name or a description of the character at the beginning of any dialog that might appear in your descriptions.plist or missiontext.plist. This would eliminate the need for colors or italics or some other form of separation between lines of dialog.

Starting to think about some hints on GNN in line with LittleBear's first suggestion above.

Possible newscasts:


i) Usge Ceanal has just attained Elite status according to a press release from the Elite Federation of pilots. In an interview, Ceanal claimed his success to be due to use of the Barkanion Bounce (named after the Lave Academician) - swirling in loops towards his opposition whilst varying his speed. This enables a trouble-free approach to one’s targets, prior to taking them down in dog-fighting.

ii) A pirate-infested Rock Hermit has just been destroyed by a police viper-squad in the rodent-ridden anarchy of Riedquat. A centre for the local slave and narcotics trade, it has finally been shut down, eviscerating the black market in the Old Worlds sector!

iii) Reports are just coming in about Orit Ceedthse, the trader murdered at Ensoreus recently. Not only did the pirates cross over to raid Ensoreus from anarchic Ararus, but it turns out that the feline was phenomenally rich, due to trading in furs and computers between Ensoreus and Ararus. Was she killed for her cargo, her money or for more murky reasons? Truth is, we don’t know!

iv) A quirium cascade bomb has been detonated at Qubeen. It caught some 27 ships and a rock hermit as well as the unlucky launcher of the bomb. Inquiries are ongoing into the exact cause of the incident. GalCop is offering handsome rewards for relevant information.

v) Archimandrite Di Joner of Digebiti has just published a new commentary on the treatise on Theological Arithmetics by Saint Phibo Nacci. Combined with an earlier analysis of the mystical fourth codicil of the Codex of Giles the Creator, Di Joner claims to prove that the ooniverse was designed through random purposefulness, and show the numerical underpinnings of all that exists. Copies of his masterpiece have been selling like hotcakes! But does anybody actually understand it? Truth is, we don't know - and neither does anyone else!

vi) The renowned courier Eresceon Abdidi lost a seventy thousand credit delivery contract by taking too few jumps! Forgetting that shorter witchspace jumps take much less time than their lengthier equivalents, he went for the most direct route across Galaxy five, losing several days - and his contract with them! He is rumoured to have sold his ship in disgust and retired to a life of farming trumbles!

vii) Police vipers at Diso have fought off another incursion of some several dozen pirates from the local anarchies, Uszaa and Reidquat. The President of Diso has appealed to GalCop for more help in stabilising the local region.

viii) The number of pirates armed with Electronic Counter Measures is increasing. Arch-Chandler RedSpear of GalCop's weapons research laboratory at Ceesxe has confirmed that more and more pirates are now using ECM in combat: "Do not fire missiles at pirates grouped in clusters of four or more, or you will waste them. At least one of them will be able to destroy your missiles" he told our reporters this morning.
