That should work fine. I'm reliably informed it could also be in a shipdata-overrides.plist - thus:

Code: Select all

"oolite_template_cobra3" =
{
	"sun_glare_filter" = 0.9;
};
Still can't see the difference.

Two questions: which ship are you flying? If not a Cobra III, you'd need to change that; and have you done a shift-restart?

Boa CC and Cobra 3.

I don't know why the glow of the sun is related to the ships. It's weird.

It's not. But the suggested tweak is being applied to a particular ship, so if your ship data key is different to the one in the example, the tweak won't be applied and you won't see any difference in game.

It doesn't work anyway. Unless I'm doing something wrong.

Now I hate this "special effect" even more.

This is unnecessarily complicated. There should be some normal option if you don't want to remove this effect.

Have you installed the Glare Clarifier OXZ? That removes the sun glare completely on a global level.

It's better, but only from a distance.

So someone broke the game so bad that even the mods aren't helping.

As a reminder, older and much nicer photos:

But is the second old photograph realistic? If one is looking through a glass cockpit window, no. If one is looking through a viewscreen, possibly, if the view has been modified. But also possibly not:
What does the "border" between star and space actually signify? It is not a physical border, surely? Just as a bonfire does not have a stable physical border...

Note: I presume that the new look for the sun came in with v.1.80 back in 2014:
• New look for the sun, including improved corona and a glare effect
• Early 2014 discussion on the matter - see this and the next few posts

This is a simple game, not a simulator. A game that should be fun, not frustrating. This effect is frustrating and doesn't look realsitic.

PS. This is what the sun looks like in Elite Dangerous Horizons:

Nice, right? In addition, you can see everything, not just a white screen.

Fair point.

If I wanted everything to be extremely realistic, I'd be playing a different game.

On the other hand, if everything is too unrealistic, I start having problems (eg with Reval's Goods Containers). But, glories of this game, I can oxp away almost all of what I dislike... and also ignore the oxp's which I dislike, too!

While I'm happy with the new-look sun myself, I do accept what you say about it. I wonder if there is an oxp which sorts it out. Sun Gear doesn't, but maybe one of these does? I suspect not, sadly. And I wonder if it is oxp-able back to the original version?

And I wonder how many other people have complained about this.

It makes the most sense to add an option to enable/disable this effect. Then everyone will be happy. If this is too hard, why not add a new global variable in your config files? So that you can easily turn it on or off.

This guy doesn't like the effect either 😅

OK, try this: NoFlare.oxz. In combination with Glare Clarifier, you should get rid of most of the glare/flare effects you've highlighted.

It doesn't work.

I've already had enough. Maybe in some update they will fix it.

I've had exactly the same with my interpretation of Cody's suggestion and with Phkb's oxp (even when I removed everything else from both AddOns folders and tried them separately and together). That's on an AppleMac.

But the older limited-use Glare Filter OXZ did work a month ago.

I haven't checked this add-on because I don't want to install the extension package manager. I am happy to check it if someone adds a link to this add-on.
