Screen fades to black periodically

Hi All,
Loving the Linux Oolite on Ubuntu, but occasionally I get a strange effect. My entire screen appears to fade to black - this takes a couple of seconds and seems to be rescued by key presses (possibly requires a reduction in speed). Is this a "blackout" feature to represent the boredom of deep space, or have I just got a weird screensaver issue.
BTW - I play full screen and haven't tried disabling my screensaver or monitor powerdown. I don't think these two options are responsible since both require long timeouts, while this effect occurs often within less than a minute of the last keypress.
Cheers
Alan
