What put me off was the time UNTIL the shuttle docked. I spent up to 15 minutes watching the shuttle fly here and there, then away again until it entered the station.

Enough time to even develop a practice to slowly and carefully use the ISD to approach the station and stick the tip of the ship into the docking bay speed up that process. Risky but not impossible.
The longest time I had to wait was maybe 2 minutes. And less at Rock Hermits. But I would get pretty close to the stations so the shuttle would not have to travel too far.

What effect did poking the nose of the ISD into the docking bay actually have?

Well either you touch the side walls and die. Or you manage to stay in the center, eventually touching the back side and the station docking sequence initiates. I got tired of waiting for the shuttle to dock so I 'invented' and 'practiced' this maneuvre - but actually it put me off from using the ISD.

Should this shuttle confusion be the case on my computer but nowhere else?

No idea - what happened when you tried docking with Rock Hermits?

And did the docking get worse over time, or was it always a nightmare?

I did not take this scientifically. So I did not make notes, take exact times etc.
In my memory it was bad and got increasingly annoying.

So, I finally had a prolonged docking shuttle session. Two things were different this time. I approached much much closer than usual before trying to dock (merely 2 of Commander James's "kuː ʊm"), and I switched the object of my target around the place. A Moray turned up too (also presumably wishing to dock).

When I eventually backed away from the Rock Hermit to a distance of 5 "kuː ʊm" , my shuttle finally managed to dock (and before the Moray, too).

I wonder if the prolongation in docking was a result of
i) my massive ship occluding the docking lane?
ii) my wandering targetting?
iii) the declanic occlusion of Tianve by a rising Qutiri with Lave and Tibecea jointly in opposition?
Image
iv) the hostility evinced by the Witchspace Lobster to those of breeding and refinement?
v) some other factor of which I remain in ignorance?

Obviously iii & iv are not to be underestimated and v can never truly be ruled out but as for the others...

i, massive or otherwise, is something I've observed to cause issue before but ii I haven't, despitinte occasional targeting profligacy on my part.

So you too, have suffered at the pernicious pincers of the Witchspace Lobster?

Did you find a solution? My Great Aunt Gertrude always suggested that Dileonian lethal water mixed with some powdered Erlabeorian deadly Stoid might help matters. Is this your experience? And does one drink it, apply it or sprinkle it?

I would not be so bold as to claim either breeding or refinement, however...

Never drink Dileonian lethal water, especially when said beverage contains any kind of powdered deadly Stoid, except under the most dire of circumstance. I'm afraid that Witchspace Lobster is as Witchspace Lobster does and one merely adjusts one's sails to suit the tempest of its inscrutable whims as best one can.
