What is the purpose of moving to different galaxy ?

When I played elite I never went beyond galaxy 2. The galatic hyperdrive is expensive and can only be used once, but when I moved to galaxy 2 I couldn't find a difference other than different planet names and locations so I thought I just wasted 5000 credits.

Are there any contents only available in higher galaxies in elite and oolite or is it just for the sake of more exploration ?

I think some of the OXP special missions take place in galaxies other than #1.

... and some non-OXP (a.k.a. native) as well.

Each Galaxy has its own ambiance that should not be spoiled in advance. You really should do a somewhat detailed tour of each Galaxy as you progress towards completing a full 8. It is not necessary to visit every planet in each Galaxy although there is a mission that calls for that. Once you are back in Galaxy 1 you can go bouncing around the Galaxies on a regular basis. As time goes by credits cease to be a factor in what you want to do so Galaxy hopping is not a problem. As the others posters in this thread have said the Galaxy specific Missions are the real icing on the cake.

Thanks, now I have a reason to travel 8 galaxies.
