I only get into trouble if I try to inject in all the way... I can get away with docking at injectors speeds if I insert two or three brief periods with injectors off so steering can catch up and align the ship in the correct direction.

Ah, you can still crash if you try to use ILS with a movable like a Liner or Behemoth, unless you start from way ahead of it and keep the relative velocity low (the dockable is still moving, it doesn't stop or slow down after granting you docking clearance). You can use it with Deep Space Dredgers if you start ahead of them (not from the sides or back) and keep asking for docking clearance as you approach (with DSDs, it keeps them from swerving away to avoid a collision).

Lots of interesting thoughts here. Just a quick comment from my side: you can save yourself a lot of waiting for equipment to become buyable if you use the Easy Start option, which will put you on Tionisla with 1000 Cr, ready to buy injectors. This should increase survival options considerably.

I consider easy start as a bit of cheating, besides 1000 Cr is not that much really. It's not a problem to get first 1000 with a normal start, especially having sold front pulse laser. The bigger problem is to earn the first 30000 Cr to get fully equipped with a couple of military lasers, extra energy unit, ECM hardened missiles, ECM system and shield boosters.

What I'm kind of afraid of is that due to some fancy OXP some ultra fast feature turns into ultra-fast suicide. I usually dock myself when I get docking clearance right away. Otherwise, I try and get closer to the station than other ships and use docking computers then. Quite often I manage to dock out of turn. I use fuel injectors in both cases.

As best I remember all the random hits ships are standard, but the higher paying ships have a higher chance of having equipment fitted. Oolite is fair in that any weapons OXPs you install are also available to NPCs. If you have Thargoid's mini-missiles installed (which allows you to have 3 micro missiles on each pylon) a Cobra Mk III could have 12 missiles if it is carrying a mini-missile pack on each pylon.

My bad, the one I was remembering, a fer de Lance, is from Anarchies OXP: is has max_energy=400 and max_flight_speed=350... the standard Fer de Lance has max_energy=150 and max_flight_speed=300

I started a new commander recently, an Adder start (had around 3k kills with the old one). I did sell the laser, missiles and heat shielding at Lave, got Telescope, took a parcel contract to Begeabi (only 2 systems away) for 436 Cr , was accosted by a crowd of assassins all the way from waypoint to main station three systems in a row (took the long way there), evaded the lasers but got killed by missiles... re-started and kept the missile to use as missile defence. Got Fuel Scoops at Reorte (I run HardWay OXP, fuels scoops are mandatory). After I delivered the package (10% bonus) I started trading in-system on precious metals only (an Adder... only 5t of cargo space... and there were 4 assassins waiting for me each time I launched from the main station even after I delivered the package ), got Fuel Injectors, a rangefinder to search for escape pods and a towbar to salvage Sidewinders and Geckos and an Extra Energy Unit. After I had enough for a beam laser, I started fighting some of the single pirates that attacked me (those without an aft laser...). Salvaged in Relaes until I had enough for a Shield Booster (the SLAPU prices are 15% off), jumped to Azaqu and was able to take out the Pirate Cove near the witchpoint... the pirates kept pouring out of the RH, and at one time there were three of them in the fight, one of them a Chimera Gunship.

That's amazing. I always thought Adder sounded to close to suicide. A single energy bank with poor recharge rate and only 2-ton cargo capacity. I find it quite hard to survive having beam lasers (and nothing else) on my Cobra Mk3. I think I wouldn't last 20 seconds with Adder. Besides I consider Cobra Mk3 best ship out there. I once had a Python. Sort of hoped to get some delivery contracts with that, but didn't last long. It has more energy banks but much slower recharge rate. At the end I think it's the rate that matters especially when shield boosters are installed.

Ah, it is so very close to suicide. But there’s a fine line separating “Adder” and “suicide,” a fine line that’s a joy to live in. The maneuverability and small size of the Adder allow it to positively dance around other ships, whittling at their shields before darting away. I would highly recommend you try it; I’ve done two broken adder starts and it’s always a blast. It’s also one of the better ways to improve your skill, particularly with a keyboard. Just make sure to remap yaw to “a” and “d” and injectors to “q,” because you’ll be using those a lot.

Thanks I'll try it! Do I need any OXPs installed to make it more fun?
I don't have any additional planets, salvage gangs, or anything. I'm trying to stick to the default as much as possible, unless it's a really nice looking Griff ship OXP or something like that. For example, I've eventually removed the Behemoth and Salvage Gangs because they don't look as good as the other Griff ships/bases. They are quite good, but just not good enough.

I play a similar style. Having being spoiled by Griff's exellent ships I've been quite picky in what I install. I've gone for all the eye candy and ship packs that only add pretty ships in the same power range as the Classic Elite ones. I do run with all the extra equipment in. If you are finding the game too slow Fuel Injector Cruise controll is a must. If you are jumping between two systems that are reasonably close you can injector your way to the station in about 3 minutes. If you spot an offender (IFF improves the game without IMHO being a cheat) take him out or just injector past. I've put my personal installs in a code tag below. I don't feel any of these unbalance the game (but it is very much personal choice) and they give you interesting things to do and speed up gameplay a lot.

I've put my personal installs in a code tag below. I don't feel any of these unbalance the game (but it is very much personal choice) and they give you interesting things to do and speed up gameplay a lot.

No probs. 90% of them though are pure flavour, immersion and graphics variety rather than things that directly affect gameplay. I would suggest putting all the mission packs in. You don't have to accept any, but there is a lot going on in the Universe if you play with all the mission packs in. None of them affect the normal game play as they only add ships if you have chosen to accept a mission. Some like Black Monks add Con Store add some very nice Stations and Ships by Griff and others like YAH and Wanted Posters add adverts to stations. Having the Bulletin Board OXP, Snoopers, Random Ship Names etc don't change the game but add a lot to the experience. I can't remember now if this is an OXP or Native feature. But if you run with the OXPs above in then always press F4 when you are docked to go to the Station's Interfaces Screen. There's lots to do there if you have the flavour and activity pack OXPs installed.

You've not tried ILS? Ultra-fast docking on the tail of another (read all the accompanying notes) ... and ultra-fast suicide when it all goes pear-shaped!

What I'm kind of afraid of is that due to some fancy OXP some ultra fast feature turns into ultra-fast suicide. I usually dock myself when I get docking clearance right away. Otherwise, I try and get closer to the station than other ships and use docking computers then. Quite often I manage to dock out of turn. I use fuel injectors in both cases.

Just tried the ILS. I wish default docking computers were at least a bit like the ILS. I think they definitely have to be improved to do the job instead of dancing around.

A chance, yes! Back when docking protocols were disabled by default, I was running as an outlaw and rapid, queue-jumping, manual docking was the only way to go. I don't recall ever getting wiped-out by a launching ship. Unless you're unlucky enough to get one actually in the slot, you should be able to dodge or hop over any obstacle. I was once shoved backwards by a launching Viper though - rather strange, that.
