Yeah tried it - looked really good but keeps crashing so haven't been able to get any subjective opinion on it.

I used to be the Slackware packager for vegastrike. It's a wonderful game, a lot more in the style of Wing Commander: Privateer than Elite. However for me, trying to keep up with it on a PIII/600 as my development machine became a bit of a bear. However, if you make the system size pretty big (so everything is spread out) it was pretty playable, even on my old system.
FFE, and Frontier... They're fun at times, but mostly I find myself frustrated with the flight system more than anything. I prefer to have fun with my games, not spend my time pulling my hair out.

The differences between Elite and Wing Commander: Privateer are numerous. They mostly stem from the differences between the Elite and Wing Commander Universes.
For one, gunfire in Privateer/Wing Commander is less in the idea of 'lasers' in my opinion, and more in the idea of photonic/particle 'bullets'. They are slow, and there's a lead time.
Another big difference is the inter-system FTL travel system. Elite is a lot more free about it. Wing Commander, the inter-system travel operates on a sort of Wormhole theory, where there are points in space that are week, and a quick burst of the right sort of energy will open a wormhole that will 'Jump' you to another point in the Universe. The device which activates these 'Jump Points' is simply called a 'Jump Drive'.
Privateer has a pretty coherent story path that the player can choose to go on. Honestly, if you like Vegastrike, I'd recommend the Wing Commander: Privateer Gemini Gold, which is a remake of the game, using the Vegastrike engine.

It's a lot easier for you to simply see the differences in the universe, and the games, than to try and describe them.

Thanks for the link - another great blast from the past. Loved all the Wing Commander/Privateer games but as technology advanced, they are sitting in the garage.
Thought the privateer: gemini gold seemed a lot better than vega strike, but maybe thats cos I was used to privateer? Only flaw I have found is the resolution - 800*600 is the max I can get and its awful on a big screen. Does anyone know how to increase it - obviously off topic for oolite
