Speed Matching

I was wondering how hard would it be to create an OXZ that puts an item up for sale it the market that allows your ship to match a target ships speed. I guess like a Torus drive but matches speed to any targeted ship.

I think this should be entirely doable by script. You would probably need a frame callback and per frame adjustment of your ship's desired speed. I'll let the scripting experts fill in the details.

While from the js its certainly possible the question I am asking myself would be if its desirable (I don't even mention realistic :D ) that a heavy cargo hauler suddenly got the speed of a fast fighter ?

There are certainly a few questions that would need to be answered: Would this be a standard-speed-only facility, or would it need to work at injector speeds? If injector speeds are desired, how would that work, as currently injector speed is not configurable in flight? It's either on or off, so a different/alternate method would need to be considered.

If I understood correct it would mean to change the max. flight speed of the ship, so different to the injectors there are no locks anymore from any other objects/ships.

I'm thinking for dogfighting. Relative speed no injector match. It is a fighter pilots item in Free Space. Seen it in a vid and thought it was a nifty idea.

It was a standard feature of X-Wing games. I remember it being a very essential feature in dog fighting, since you had so many other things to worry, like energy distribution between shields, weapons and engines.

It would be so handy in a dog fight, especially till I can get a flight stick. lol
I'm not all that good at flying by keystroke.
