Given that Oolite takes place eight centuries in the future, it's only remarkable that English is so well-preserved Maybe it's thanks to the automated translators that convert the myriads of alien dialects into your own dialect.

Perhaps they are evil because they attempt to corrupt the language.

Clearly there has been some linguistic drift over the centuries, and what they are now calling "tree wolfs" are the creatures that, in a more primitive time and place, were known as "drop bears".

This is actually mildly close to the truth. (Except its a generator rather than translator.)

Well those orcs and goblins did ride wolves, but wolfing seems a bit hasty to me. Surely an ent would feel that anything worth eating is worth taking a long time to eat.
