Jay and Hamilton are coming!

That is to say... coming to Oolite!
Well, at least their ship is.Image

I started learning Wings 3D so that I could mod one or two existing ships to better suit my sensibilities (Like getting the engines of the Boa onto the centerline of thrust).

So I started by building some old ship designs of my own from about 30 years ago... but suddenly last night It just poinged into my head, "OGC-1! OMG, this MUST BE!"

This ship is from the web series "Deep Space 69". It's humorous. They are going into season 3, but I still believe episode 3, "The crotch hugger" is my all-time fav. Even the episode titles are great, like "Looking for love, in Alderaan places." Heh, I still laugh even when typing it.

I won't go into more explanation about the series, except to recommend it. The ship itself is worth some mention. It has an... iconic look to it. As said in the show itself:

Prince Baller Hardware: "Anyone ever told you, incidentally, that your ship looks like a dick?"
Image
Jay: "No. No one has ever said that before. You are the first."

Even having to download a working ManifoldLabs version of Wings 3D (for boolean operations), I was able to knock up the model in a single night.

I've taken great care to get all features and measurements correct. There exists some inconsistencies over the run of the show. I've taken snapshots of views from all angles, including when it was crashed upside-down, and when it was represented holographically as a 3d image.

I also used the rule that 1 WU (Wings Unit) = .5 meters. I also took snapshots of people next to, in, and floating outside the ship. I'm happy with its dimensions so far. I've also had to take some liberties with the lower fin, which varies in the show, and doesn't work the way it's sometimes displayed. My version covers the bases of standard viewpoints by using disappearing vantage points, blah blah, yada yada.

(actually, In looking up some things while writing this, I've finally seen a perfect reference for the upper fin length. Nnnnice!)

My next step is to paint it. I finally lost my version of Photoshop 7 (the last version to do everything before they pulled some features out to give "Illustrator" a reason to exist), so I'm learning Gimp. NOT a fan so far.

I could model the "heat exchanger" louvers at the top front of the ship, but the engine pods are already so heavily vertexed that I'll just paint them on.

Then I'll try to make it work in the game.

The OGC-1 in the Oolite universe; some thoughts...
Ship size comparisons show it to be quite small. This compares it's size to a Mamba and Standard Missile:

Internal space is saved by having the engines in external pods - surrounded by most of the fuel. This helps keep their temperatures lower so... oh nevermind. The joke isn't worth it.

Internal cargo is low. I estimate 3 tons. There are 2 passenger berths, (Jay and Hamilton's personal rooms). But for game purposes, a player will be considered to use one, so there is 1 passenger berth as standard equipment that can be switched out for a total of 8 tons of cargo.

The final passenger berth for the pilot (Jay's room) cannot be switched out. It's considered integral to the ship. Actually it's the other way around, as the pilot's berth exists to house Jay's bed, and the ship exists to house Jay's berth. If Jay could fly through space on just a bed, I'm sure he would do it. As it is, he had to wrap a spaceship around it.

This ship had a single hardpoint at the front... (nevermind, that jokes too easy). It is a dual purpose launcher/laser...orifice. In the show, they've used lasers on one occasion (to kill someone through the window of their hotel room), and intended to use missiles once. They both came out the same hole. Because of the ship's size, I estimate no more that 2 missiles can be stored internally. A pulse laser is standard.

This ship will come standard with a planetary landing system, and any prerequisites for that I can't think of at the moment.

Shields will be standard but upgradeable.

This ship is used as an interstellar courier. Usually taking people (usually preferred to be female humanoid), from one place to another. Like a taxi with a bed.

It's one outstanding attribute should be its speed. I'm guessing in the 410 - 470 range. The ships most used secondary purpose has been as a getaway vehicle.

Time to fight with Gimp some more. I'll say more when I have more to say.

Oh, and for fans of the show, I'm also modelling the OGC-2, with the extended fuselage (for extra cargo). ;)

*** I wish the game had a trigger for moveable parts. Like Microsoft Flight Simulator 2, where models could have a trigger for landing gear operation. I first wanted such a thing for extendable solar sails, but now I also want it for the OGC-2's extendable fuselage. I hope that asking for the inclusion of 90's technology isn't too much. I know that Deep Space Dredgers have doors that can be triggered by AI. Can these effects also be triggered by a keypress? :D ***

Peas.

Ek.

Welcome Mr Ekshin!

In Oolite it is possible to put the gear models into subentities and hide/show or even move via javascript. For an example you can look into the source code of dertien's ships which features deployable landing gear for NPC's and Player.
