Mining Without Mining Lasers

Make sure you have some nice shields before you start this.

Shoot up a few asteroids until one of them splits up into boulders.
Get to about 0.5 km of one of the boulders
Ram it at about .75 full speed!
Scoop about 6 tons of minerals!
Scoop any splinters that are left over

Not that a cargo hold of minerals is worth much,
but it makes a change from shooting people and keeps the galaxy tidy :D

I wonder if this is cost effective. Would this maneuver hastens the appearance of the dreaded Maintenance Overhaul?

that's the first thing I thought of, since shields don't protect you 100% (or they don't seem to for me, maybe that's just an illusion) and minerals always have a low price I don't think it would be that cost effective. I would appear to me that just trading minerals from planet to planet would be more cost effective.
