As punishment for the heinous crime of interfering with a generation ship, you are about to be marooned on a remote asteroid. However, GalCop aren't barbarians – you'll be given a hab* and be allowed to take eight discs, one book, and one luxury, with you. It ain't as easy as it sounds – choose wisely!

Note: one disc equals one album (double or triple albums count as one).

Discs:

  • Live/Dead (Grateful Dead)
    Ummagumma (Pink Floyd)
    Goldberg Variations (Bach)
In the Court of the Crimson King (King Crimson)
    Planets Suite (Holst)
In Search of the Lost Chord (Moody Blues)
    Pastoral Symphony (Beethoven)
    Happy Trails (Quicksilver Messenger Service)

Book: The Histories (Herodotus)

Luxury: a Staunton chess set

*A Marine Corps one-man survival hab, guaranteed to keep you alive for at least five years.

I would say it is cheating: Since the other 2 items are discs and a book, it would make sense the luxury item is not a data carrier.
(Maybe you should choose something that can read/play your 8 discs..)

Personally, for the luxury item I was thinking about a pencil and a supply of paper. Besides the obvious, I could use that to create a chess set, a deck of cards, etc.. (How much paper can I bring? Or can I only bring either a pencil or paper but not both?)

Discs

Friday Night in San Francisco by Al Di Meola, John McLaughlin and Paco de Lucía.
All Time Greatest Hits by Lynyrd Skynyrd
A Decade of Hits 1969–1979 the Allman Brothers Band
Deamons and Wizards Uriah Heep
Magicians Birthday Uriah Heep
Deep Purple Live in Japan
This Is The Moody Blues ( very hard choice here as i want albums 2 to 8 from the discocgraphy)
a compilation of classical music. i know of none existing but lets say 20 hand picked ie Smetna The Moldau , Tchaikovsky's Piano Concerto No. 1 in B-flat minor , the usual Beethoven and Mozart and Bach etc.....

Book
The Asimov Chronicles: Fifty Years of Isaac Asimov

Luxury Item
Maton Acoustic guitar possibly the 12 string as i can always remove the extras.....

the book was actually the most difficult, not really sure about it still. by book i assumed you meant a single volume not a series...
the problem is that most books today are not just 1 book. they are written with at least 3 in mind. so if i pick 1 i will always be wondering "what happens next? ". so a compilation of short to medium stories with a bit of varity is in order..

At least Lord of the Rings has been published as one volume for a long time (since the '60s, I think).
I've seen The Hyperion Cantos published as one massive paperback - that'd be a nice long read.

It took me quite a while to go through my collection of vinyl and decide upon ten. It was an enjoyable journey.
