Replacing HUD elements with bitmaps?

Sorry if this is not the appropiate place, I'm not really a forum guy.

Is it possible to replace some HUD elements with bitmaps? for example, the missile arrows for missile.png, activemissile.png or similar? Or the crosshair (a different crosshair per weapon, not the same bitmap placed there)?

Yes it is. The HUD definitions are text files that refer to those bitmap files.

Perhaps easier is to download a bunch of OXPs in zip format and see how it's done. You can find many there: http://wiki.alioth.net/index.php/Category:HUDs_OXPs

OXZ packages are also actually zip files, so you can open them with just any archive manager I think.
