I had my first whitchdrive malfunction since 1.82, took me to an ongoing battle between a Navy ship and 2 Thargoid Cruisers, several Thargoid Battleships. After killing two, I hit "P" to pause, after the pause my HUD was gone. Without crosshair that was a lost battle, so I hyperjumped again, but after the jump still the same. With no compass, no radar, I quit the game.
The Thargoid battle was probably due to GalNavy OXP, otherwise I have auto-crosshairs but I use the standard HUD.

Did you hit 'o' whilst paused, perchance? That disables/enables the hud.
I would advise stilts for the quagmires, and camels for the snowy hills
And any survivors, their debts I will certainly pay. There's always a way!

Re: HUD gone in interstellar space
Probably a stupid question, but is it possible that you accidentally hit "O" as well?
Edit: Cody beat me to it...

"You wouldn't kill me just for a few credits, would you?" – "No, I'll do it just for the fun!"
Re: HUD gone in interstellar space
Ooops? I was not aware, that you could disable the HUD???
Since O is very close to P, that's absolutely possible. I was in a hurry.
A pity for that nice battle.

Easily done in the heat of combat. It's mostly used for screenshots, but I often fly - and occasionly fight - with the hud disabled.
