Every time I dock, I have to wait ages for traffic. Is there any way of speeding this up?

Try Shift-C - insta-docking! Or disable Docking Clearance Protocol - F2, Game Options.

There is a time acceleration in developer releases, up to 16x but there are drawbacks like decreased accuracy of calculations and increased CPU demand which result lower frame rates.

Moreover your request motivated me to make [wiki]ILS[/wiki] available for NPCs, most ships can dock faster from now if you install this equipment package.
