CTD trunk nightly 1.83.0.6610-150824-1274242

Post by Cody »

Paused the game whilst docked, minimised it to task bar, went to the loo - and Oolite had crashed when I returned.

Latest.log here.

Edit to add: can't repeat it, but on subsequent flights, Oolite seems to be using more RAM than usual.

I would advise stilts for the quagmires, and camels for the snowy hills
And any survivors, their debts I will certainly pay. There's always a way!

Now, are you sure it wasn't the loo causing the error?

Maybe you should include a log from the privy as well.

*eyebrow waggle*

On second thought... don't.
Reports of my death have been greatly underestimated.

Looks like something filled up all the memory in the Javascript engine. None of your OXPs seem particularly likely to do that - have any of them been upgraded recently? On the other hand I don't think anything in the core JS scripts should be doing that either.

No, nothing's been upgraded within the last fortnight, and I run trunk every night. A CTD, of any sort, is a very rare occurrence on my machine.

An unconnected question: roughly how much system RAM would you expect Oolite to use? Not that I'm lacking RAM - I've got oodles of it.

Strange. I wonder if there's something in one of the OXPs that causes trouble if the game is paused for a while.

Oolite uses a bit over 1Gb for me. Depending on how many large texture OXPs you run, it could easily go higher.

Been experimenting: normally, Oolite uses 1.2GB/1.3GB here whether flying, docked, or paused. When docked, paused, and minimised however, I've just had one occurrence where its RAM usage jumped to over 5GB <scratches head>

Again - docked, paused, minimised, RAM usage climbed steadily. At over 8GB Oolite locked-up solid, with a similar bunch of errors in the log.

Does it happen if you're minimised but not paused? (If so, does it matter if you're docked)

Does it also happen while minimised in 1.82?

Only pausing when docked (then minimising) is my usual way of playing, so I'm very rarely, if ever, paused in flight. I did try last night, but could not induce the fault. I've not noticed it before when only minimised, whether docked or in flight, and I would surely notice such an increase in RAM usage (I have a tell-tale in the system tray). I'll test that later, though - and I'll try without OXPs too. Any other logging I can enable?

I've never seen it in 1.82 (again, I'll test that later), and I hadn't seen it in 1.83 until 1.83.0.6610-150824-1274242.

Off-topic: I'm still seeing that occasional gfx glitch with planetary textures (at varying distances), btw.

Cody, I seem to recall you're on Windows. What program are you using to get that info in system tray?

Sysinternals Process Explorer. Very useful tool - been using it for years (since before MS bought Sysinternals, in fact).

I can't reproduce it when minimised in flight, but when minimised whilst docked I can, whether paused or not. Strangely, though I've never seen it before, I reproduced it once in 1.82 - docked, paused, and minimised. Hmm... could it be my machine? I can't see how, but... time to try without OXPs, I suppose.

<tosses 0.02 Credits on the table>
Could be some of the AddOns.
Here are two examples of memory behavior (both with the self build of the latest):
1. No AddOns (launched from oolite.app created by the build, with an older save file)
a. startup (@ 18:38)
Image
b. one trip, docked, paused (@ 20:07)
Image
2. With AddOns (launched from my "regular" local x86_64 folder with the same Resources + dlls + exe as above)
a. startup (@ 20:15)
Image
b. one trip, docked paused (@ 20:54)
Image
While in case 1 oolite recovers 56k RAM in 1 hour 29 minutes, in case 2 it looses over 55 M in 39 minutes.
For the record, this is the report on AddOns in case 2:

Most games have some sort of paddling-pool-and-water-wings beginning to ease you in: Oolite takes the rather more Darwinian approach of heaving you straight into the ocean, often with a brick or two in your pockets for luck. ~ Disembodied

So happens occasionally in 1.82 while docked, paused and minimised; happens reliably in current nightly builds in the same situation?

Is your 1.82 install the "players" or "OXPers" version?

You don't think this happened in whatever your previous nightly build was? Can you remember which one that was?
