Expansion Pack causes game freeze

Hi guys

So... I got my new Elite Dangerous, recently, spent a week trying to learn how to fly the [expletive deleted] ship, and realised I just wanted to hang out in the old universe. Discovered Oolite (how did I not know this existed?) and had a go.

and then discovered expansion packs. Yay.

so downloaded the 'beginners' module' - and

1) it failed to download a key part of the module (sorry, didn't take notes, and have since had to uninstall it all because...

2) the game froze and wouldn't run with either my saved commander or a new one.

So - 2 questions (and I'm sorry, these are really, really basic)

where are the files (and/or, what's the extension) so I can make sure the uninstall really stripped them all out.

and

is there a way to load expansions one a a time so I can find out what's causing the freeze?

I'm running an iMac 5k Retina with Yosemite 10.10.4 Graphics by AMD Radeon R9 M290 2048 MB

also

is there a way to convert pitch/roll to my mouse?

thanks, all

Eceni

Welcome aboard, Commander! My general advice is don't bother with Multi-Packs - select OXPs/OXZs carefully, one by one!
Stick to eye-candy at first, get into the game, then you can think about other stuff.

On a Mac, any Expansion Pack files should be in ~/Library/Application Support/Oolite/AddOns/. The extension would be .oxp or .oxz. I'm not sure what individual packs are in the "Beginner's Module": where did you download it from?

Packs can be installed one at a time, either through the OXZ manager or manually: see the [wiki]OXP[/wiki] page on the wiki for more details.

Mouse control can be toggled by pressing "M" (i.e. uppercase m) (unless you've redefined key_mouse_control).

The so-called 'beginners' module is from the OXZ manager. No further comment!

Or, if you installed them through the in-game manager, in ~/Library/Application Support/Oolite/Managed AddOns/. (If you installed them through the in-game manager, it has a removal mode which will clean them up without you needing to go in and delete them)

If the game is freezing, you may be able to get help diagnosing this and tracking down which expansions are causing the problem by posting your Latest.log file (I think the Mac version has a menu option which points to this)

Hi Eceni, and welcome.
Sorry to hear you have had a couple of problems but don't worry, we are very good at sorting them out here - we get lots of practice
Going for a clean re-install might be wise, and as it sounds like you have un-installed anyway, do that. And the 'good' advice around here is avoid expansions to begin with (except any eye-candy that has no affect on the game) then add expansions one by one, learning each as you go.
Avoid anything which claims to be for beginners etc as none of the suggested packs are really suitable. Sadly, some around here think they know best and as you've found, they don't and the consequences can be grim. As you've also found, just because something is available via the Expansions Manager doesn't mean it is any good! That's the price we pay for being a free and open community.

Confusing opinion with fact is a trecherous yet enticing path... or at least that's my opinion

That reminds me, I'm due to upload another one :P

Welcome Eceni :D

There may be the odd disagreement around here but it remains a friendly place. I hope you like it here.

Welcome aboard, Eceni!

I think you refer my Addons for Beginners collection which is downoaded more than 500 times so far without any problems so please help me to identify your problem. This install many oxz files but if you remove just this package then all others still stay installed.

First, you can remove any installed package within the game using the "Remove expansion pack" menu item - the 3. from the top if you see the list of packages, this change the list to show only the installed ones, then a selection will remove one by one.

There is an important file in Oolite/Logs/Latest.log which contain a list of loaded packages including the path of them.

If you can find and remove all of your oxz files then:
1. Try if you can start a game without any packages. I hope yes.
2. Please try install my collection again to see if the problem is repeatable. I hope not, in this case you previously maybe run into the nightly wiki downtime. If yes then please press "*" to make a screenshot into your oolite-saves/snapshots folder and/or write down the message and post here together with your Latest.log.

About mouse control, shift+control+m use yaw instead of roll if you like it.

Thanks, all - I'm amazed at the speed and comprehensive nature of the responses.

yes, I did use the expansions manager.

I'm working just now, but I'll go in later on and sort out what had the issues - but yes, it was the Addons for Beginners... I am very much that - just coming down from a decade's addiction to WoW and trying to find something else that has the buzz but doesn't eat so much time...

thanks, all

One more thing, since we're here and you're all so helpful...

I tried Shift-M for the mouse. No joy.

I'm a left handed mouser with monstrous RSI, so use an Evoluent left hander... guessing that somehow the system and the mouse don't talk to each other. Is there something obvious I'm missing to make it work?

finding killing things remarkably hard without that extra manoeuvrability...

Are ypu playing in a window? Mouse on the release versions works only in full screen.

I was - and tried it in full screen and it seems unplayable. So back to mouse and keyboards.

thank you all

fuel scoops- seem not to work. Died three times last night at different suns. Is there some knack to it that isn't the obvious 'fly close, lift until the sun is on the lower half of the monitor and cruise over'?

thank you!

You may want to try activating the mouse by pressing Shift+Ctrl+M rather than just Shift+M. This sets an alternative mode for control, which resembles FPS games. You may find that easier.
