Hi there everyone,
Firstly, thank you all so much for a brilliant game, Oolite is what Elite looked like in my mind when I played the original on my Beeb. Some 30 years on it looks better than I ever imagined and it even runs a treat on my rather dated IBM T40, I don't know how you do it, but I'm glad you do!!!
Since my Beeb days I have been fortunate enough to work in the space business for real and one thing space-borne cameras do a lot is take pictures in all sorts of regions of the EM spectrum other than visible. E.g. radio, microwave, infra-red, UV and on into x-rays and gamma rays. These can reveal all sorts of features not normally visible e.g. x-ray jet emission from black holes and microwave emissions from nebulae normally hidden by interstellar dust. In infra-red or microwave, targets or entities that are normally very dimly lit by visible light might be shown up, with a suitably equipped ship?
These days my coding exploits are limited to Matlab code for designing antennas, so I'm not sure I'll get the time to master Oxp writing, best leave it to you the professionals! Anyway, perhaps some ideas for you?
Thanks again for allowing me to re-live a bit of my childhood, fantastic!
