Equipment: Information Base

I suggest a purchasable upgrade that gives you an in-game encyclopedia/guide with detailed information, images, and back-story on ships, equipment, etc.
Not only would it help new players but also it would add an interesting bit of detail to the game. Is this possible with current Oolite code?

I think it's kinda redundant, seeing as there are so many other points of reference, the most concise being the Elite Wiki.

I don't think an in-game system would come close to that, and given that in order to have Oolite you need to have an internet connection, it makes sense to rely on the online resources.

The ship information on the wiki is very much based in-game, and a lot of it is written 'in character', so it's the best place for information.

On the Mac we could easily provide a web view for the Wiki… making it purchasable would just be silly, though.

Come to think of it, a link to the Wiki from the Help menu (again, OS X only) would probably make sense.

I think it would be nice to have it locally too. I often play on the train and other places where I'm not connected.

You can download darkbee's Oolite Reference Sheet from Oosat, it's a pdf file.

I have that already. I thought we were talking about something more extensive, like a compilation of the wiki-material.

I think that an information base inside Oolite really isn't neccesary. I started playing Oolite without any clue who Giles was (I was a typical twitch gamer then). Then it sort of grew on me. Suddenly I had this maddening thirst for Oolitian knowledge. In conclusion, the game pretty much teaches the player about itself.

On a slightly unrelated note, would it be possible for Oolite to connect to Oosat Too and automatically check for updates. Nothing real fancy. It would just say at start up something along the lines of...

Oosat Too has been updated with more OXPs. Be sure to check them out soon.

What do you guys think of that?
