After reading Drew Wagar's series, I wanted to play the game based on the books because it sounded fun. I've been playing Oolite for a while now, and I have some questions that I hope you can answer.

Why do I see a bunch of coloured lines/lanes when my weapons systems are offline? What is their significance? How come I can't see the lines normally while my weapons systems are online? Also, why can I see all the ships in the area on my scanner when my weapons system is offline, but whey they're online I can only see a few and they're grey? Oh, and how come some ships I've encountered can go extremely fast, like they were using the Torus drive while I can't?

That doesn't sound like normal behaviour at all. Either there's something really odd with your install, or you have an OXP I'm not familiar with installed.

Could you take screenshots of the difference between online and offline ('*' key) and put them somewhere we can see them, and also copy and paste your Latest.log file up here. (If you're not sure where to find the screenshots or the log file, let us know which operating system and Oolite version you have)

Oh, and how come some ships I've encountered can go extremely fast, like they were using the Torus drive while I can't?

If they've got purplish exhausts, that's fuel injection. It's quite a bit slower than Torus drive, but a lot faster than normal flight. You can buy fuel injectors for your own ship at high tech systems.

If they're just travelling really fast (and you already knew what injectors are and it's definitely not that) ... again, the screenshots and log file might help track down what's causing that.

Hi Huntress, welcome in this forum!

As cim said, some screenshots would be helpful what you can make in-game with the asterisk key. The pictures should be in your oolite-saves/snapshots folder and you can use postimage.org for image uploads, then put the direct link into [img]...[/img] tags here and check the result with the preview button before submit.

If you post here the contents of your Logs/Latest.log file then we can see which extensions you installed. Now I have a guess only: the masslock borders of Telescope?

Thanks, Norby. I read about the mass lock borders and that's what it is exactly.

Also, thanks for telling me about the fuel injectors. I've escorted some traders and they occasionally tell me that they're going to use fuel injectors, and then they speed away. Now that I know what they are I'm going to use them because I love to go fast!

I also have another question. When I'm playing, I often encounter ships with multiple lasers. They're pretty strong, and although I have pretty good shields I have to fly away because they're just too strong. Do you know where I can get some multiple lasers? Also, what is the use of turrets?

Hi Huntress, and welcome.
I'm afraid you can't have multiple lasers - player ships cannot have them. In the past some super-tough NPCs were given multiple lasers to make them super-tough, but since changes (improvements) to NPC lasers in the core game, these are un-necessary by and large, and do leave these ships far too powerful.
Unless you really want them, removing the OXPs containing them is the best way to re-balance your game.

Telescope with Extender show visible ships over the scanner range at the border of the scanner, but in green alert only or if you force it by turning off your weapons, else these are greyed out to help focus on nearby targets.

You can install another into the aft view and switch between your views if one is overheated.

Not only for NPCs though. They can be installed also on player ships.
