Solar Horizon

Prior to 1.80 my refuelling technique was to head straight for the sun until mass locked then level off and fly straight at the solar horizon. Worked just fine - full fuel tanks and away just fine.

With 1.80 I can't see where the damned horizon is 'cos the sun is too damned fuzzy.

Any suggestions (other than buying fuel that is)?

You could try Spara's sun glare filter OXP.

... or just use the Space Compass.

I was out there just now, and had no difficulty seeing the sun's horizon.

That's the elegant way - the fast-and-dirty* way is when you hit masslock, hit the injectors and dive straight for the heart of the sun. The moment the tank begins to gulp, pull a one-eighty, hit hyperspace, and you're away, fully-tanked. Cabin temperature shouldn't be a problem - but nothing is guaranteed.

*Requires a small amount of fuel already in the tank, of course.

I personally don't bother with refueling at the sun. It always seemed more of an exotic, do it once sort of thing. I mean, it's not like fuel is THAT expensive. Unless, of course, you are prone to getting onto the wrong side of the law. Then yeah, I dive straight towards the sun on injectors while watching my altitude gauge. Temperature shouldn't be a problem unless you don't have heat shielding, in which case why are you sunskimming again? Oh yeah, wrong side of the law. If you get on their bad side before you're properly equipped, then you will quickly find out why some people like this game.

I know, just years of running projects on a shoestring have left me with a horror of unnecessary costs (even in an imaginary business) ;-)

That's what I normally do. Do remember to check the altimeter before hitting the injectors though. I let myself get complacent with that, then yesterday I went to sun-skim at a small sun. Masslocked, hit the injectors, and very shortly afterwards... "Press Space"
